The Adaptive Recreation Specialist performs responsible routine work coordinating, planning, implementing, and evaluating programs such as classes, camp, day/overnight trips, and/or special events for either individuals with disabilities or for seniors. Supervises the work of subordinate staff. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Adaptive Recreation Manager.
The preferred hiring range for this position is between $25.31 - $30.47 an hour ($52,625.44 to $63,369.45 Annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position which provides excellent benefits including 13 paid holidays plus 1 floating holiday, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, City's retirement options, gym membership reimbursement, tuition reimbursement, and continuing education/training opportunities.
The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system which offers both a defined benefit and a defined contribution option. While the City does not participate in VRS, the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met. Education and Experience: Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.
Bachelor’s degree in adaptive recreation, recreation, special education, or related field, AND 1 year of experience in adaptive recreation, special education, disability awareness/services, or related areas with a focus on accessibility, inclusion, or support for individuals with disabilities.
OR
Associate degree (or some college level coursework) in adaptive recreation, recreation, special education, or related field, AND 3 years of experience in adaptive recreation, special education, disability awareness/services, or related areas with a focus on accessibility, inclusion, or support for individuals with disabilities.
OR
High School diploma or GED AND 5 years of experience in adaptive recreation, special education, disability awareness/services, or related areas with a focus on accessibility, inclusion, or support for individuals with disabilities.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
Preferred:
Previous supervisory experience in recreation, education, or similar area.
Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:
Must obtain and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license and acceptable driving record according to city criteria.
Ability to drive 15-passenger minibus.
CPR/First Aid/AED certification or the ability to become certified within 3 months of hire.
Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check and pre-employment drug screen.
