Hours: 40; days and hours worked will depend on needs and may include early mornings, late nights, and/or weekends.
The Parks Department maintains, operates, and manages selected public parks and recreation facilities in Spartanburg County, including sports fields, picnic areas, playgrounds, recreation centers, trails/greenways and blueways. The department also provides a variety of recreation programs for Spartanburg County citizens of all ages and abilities and promotes/supports sports tourism. The award-winning department is dedicated to public safety and quality customer service, achieved through cooperation and teamwork. Parks Department employees are expected to report to work on time, ready to work and to complete assigned duties to the satisfaction of their supervisor. Department employees must also be flexible; employees typically have a primary work assignment but may also be asked to work in secondary assignments to meet customer demands and take advantage of opportunities to provide new or enhanced recreation programs.
POSITIONSUMMARY
Provides regional leadership and coordination for park operations within an assigned service area of the County. This position oversees multiple park sites and staff, ensuring consistent service delivery, operational standards, and customer experience across facilities.
Serves as the primary point of coordination for one of the Department’s designated regions and provides direction to Senior Site Coordinators and site-level staff.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Park Operations Manager or the Park Operations Manager, depending on assignment
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Coordinate and oversee daily operations across multiple park sites within an assigned region, ensuring consistency in maintenance, scheduling, and customer service
Provide leadership and supervision to Senior Site Coordinators, Site Coordinators, part-time staff, contractors, and volunteers
Plan, assign, and monitor work across sites to ensure operational efficiency and high-quality service delivery
Oversee scheduling and coordination of facilities including athletic fields, indoor spaces, shelters, and special event areas
Serve as the regional lead for athletic programming, tournaments, and large-scale events; resolve scheduling conflicts and ensure successful execution
Act as the primary liaison between the Department and regional stakeholders including youth athletic associations, community groups, and event organizers
Conduct routine inspections of facilities and grounds to ensure safety, cleanliness, and readiness
Ability to anticipate project needs, discern work priorities, and meet deadlines with little supervision
Willingness to work evenings and weekends including being on-call when not at the facility
Respond to complex customer concerns, incidents, and operational issues; ensure appropriate documentation and follow-up
Assist in budget-related activities including monitoring expenditures, processing requisitions, and managing resources for assigned region
Support recruitment, training, scheduling, and evaluation of staff within the region
Identify operational needs, recommend improvements, and assist in implementing department initiatives and strategic goals
OTHER DUTIES
Work hours may be varied, depending on seasonal demands, with longer hours and/or additional night and weekend work during some portions of the year
Collect, analyze, and report operational data and performance metrics as assigned
Work is performed primarily outdoors and may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, noise, and environmental hazards; proper PPE is required
Ability to operate equipment such as trucks, golf carts, radios, and basic maintenance tools
Comply with County policies as well as Parks Department regulations and procedures
Promote customer and visitor compliance with all rules, regulations, and safety practices as well as report all accidents/injuries and ensure that injured parties receive proper care
Additional assigned duties as required
Work schedules may vary based on operational needs, including nights, weekends, and on-call responsibilities

Ability to lead, direct, and motivate part-time staff and volunteers in a team environment
Strong leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to manage multiple staff and sites simultaneously; ability to coordinate complex operations across a geographic region
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including trucks, golf carts, radios, and basic maintenance tools
Must be physically able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects
Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work
Work involves moving, climbing, reaching, bending, and stooping for moderate periods of time
Requires ability to speak and/or signal people to exchange information
Must be able to understand and follow instructions, both oral and written, to work productively in a team environment, and to skillfully use tools and equipment related to assignments and according to instructions
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Parks, Recreation, Tourism, Sport Management, or related field
Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in parks, recreation, or facility operations, including three (3) to five (5) years supervisory experience
Proficiency in English required
Proficiency with Microsoft Office software applications required
LICENSE,CERTIFICATIONS,andOTHERREQUIREMENTS
Must possess or be able to obtain certification in CPR/First Aid/AED, certification as a NRPA Certified Parks and Recreation Professional, Nationals Alliance for Youth Sports certification, and other position specific certifications, as directed
Must successfully pass pre-employment screening processes, including drug screen, criminal background check, and clean driving record
All regular full-time and part-time employees of Spartanburg County are required by state law to participate in the South Carolina Retirement System
