Madison Square Park Conservancy (NYC)
Madison Square Park Conservancy is the nonprofit entrusted by the City of New York to operate Madison Square Park, a 6.2-acre public space in the heart of Manhattan. Our mission is to conserve, maintain, and program this ever-evolving, historic green space, including raising 100% of the park’s operating budget. Our dedicated team takes great pride in caring for and shaping an urban oasis for all to enjoy.
Anchoring a diverse and vibrant live-work community, Madison Square Park is both an intimate neighborhood park and an international destination for 60,000 daily visitors. A public space since 1686, the park has long been a gathering place for people from all walks of life. Today, it is also a public garden, urban forest, wildlife habitat, public art exhibition space, a haven for children and pets to play, and one of New York City’s most transcendent and welcoming places.
Reporting to the Director of Park Operations and Horticulture, the two Park Operations Managers work together in coordination with the field crew responsible for the maintenance, sanitation, and care of Madison Square Park. Operations Managers coordinate across all departments to ensure that the park is presented at the highest level of cleanliness, hospitality and safety. We are currently seeking one Park Operations Manager.
Organizational Structure
Park Operations Managers report directly to the Director of Park Operations and Horticulture
Direct reports to this position: 1 Park Manager, 3 Associate Park Managers
Key Responsibilities
Park Operations:
Maintain the highest standards of park and personal safety
Monitor for, address, and report park safety hazards, vandalism, etc
Report rule violations in real time to Park Ambassadors to address
Ensure that the park, dog run, and Worth Square are presented, maintained, operated at the highest standards of cleanliness and good repair
Operate, troubleshoot, and provide preventative maintenance of machinery and equipment
Install park signage and communications materials as needed
Be available during inclement weather and other emergencies
Leadership:
Train staff on operational best practices and MSOC standards regarding professional development, maintenance, sanitation, machinery, inspection, reporting, etc.
Identify areas for improvement and suggest improvements, as necessary, to meet MSPC’s high operational standards
Be the face of the organization with the public, vendors, contractors, volunteers, etc.; communicate effectively with patrons as well as team members
Implement procedures to encourage teamwork, maintain employee morale and create an inclusive environment
Hire, mentor, coach, and discipline staff with support from senior staff
Administration:
Maintain daily park records, including documentation, budgets, inventories, safety reports, inspection forms, etc.
Respond to emails, inquiries, and requests in a timely and appropriate fashion
Implement schedules and develop staff training to maintain highest standard of care
Compile reports and datasets
Vendor, supply, and contractor procurement
Event Support:
Set up and break down public programs, events, and volunteer activities in the park
Participate in special projects as needed
Compensation and Schedule
Salary range is $55,000 - $60,000 based on experience.

Schedule: Fulltime, 40 hours/week, some evening and weekend hours
Flexibility required for training, events, and weather emergencies

Qualifications
3 years of park, public space, or facility management experience or equivalent based upon experience
2 years of leadership or management experience
Ability to work effectively on multiple projects and meet deadlines
Comfort interacting with public and being in a public-facing role
Strong, compassionate leader comfortable delegating tasks, inspiring others to perform at their best, and disciplining staff when necessary
Detail-oriented problem solver who can adapt to changing priorities and identify new opportunities
Knowledge of technology, including Google suite, Slack, and Zoom
Ability to perform physically strenuous work in various weather conditions alone and in a team environment
