The City of Portland’s Parks, Recreation and Facilities department consists of three major divisions: Parks, Recreation, and Public Assembly Facilities. The department also manages Portland's Troubh Ice Arena and Riverside Golf and Grill.
The Portland Parks Division manages a parks system that includes over 60 parks and playgrounds, 7.5 miles of multi-use trails, 10 community gardens, 2 stadiums, 16 cemeteries, dozens of athletic fields and courts, all spread across 1,000+ acres of land. The Parks Division also stewards an urban forest of 20,000 inventoried trees, and maintains flowerbeds, meadows, and natural open spaces throughout the city. Our Park Rangers make sure our parks are safe for all, and our hard working maintenance crews keep our parks beautiful in the summer, and plow our city sidewalks and trails in the winter. The Parks Division aims to provide outdoor recreational opportunities for everyone, during all four seasons of the year: from the Portland Skatepark, to 4 splash pads and wading pools, 2 dog parks, 4 maintained ice skating ponds, a sledding hill and miles of groomed XC ski track.
The Recreation Division offers a vast array of recreation programs and cl...inics for preschool, youth, family, teens, adults, and senior adults at its five community centers. This includes but is not limited to the before and after school programs in Portland's nine elementary schools, a 62+ program for seniors, aquatics programs, therapeutic and inclusion programs, and basketball for K-6th grade students.
The Public Assembly Facilities Division is responsible for the scheduling and management of Merrill Auditorium, Portland Exposition Building, Hadlock Field, Ocean Gateway and Maine State Pier. This division provides all event services including front of house and backstage operations as well as security, concessions and custodial services. Prime Tenant contracts include Portland Symphony Orchestra, Portland Ovations, Portland Sea Dogs, Maine Red Claws and the Portland School Department. In addition, this division oversees the permitting of events in the City’s parks, open spaces and streets and manages large scale outdoor events including the annual July 4th celebration on the Eastern Prom. This past year, the division was responsible for over 1,100 events with over 400,000 attendees.
