The City of Unalaska of Unalaska is accepting applications for Recreation Coordinator – Special Events & Community Relations position. Located in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor. Unalaska, Alaska is a coastal community located in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,250 full-time residents and seasonal influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The ideal candidate for this position is a highly motivated, community-minded individual with experience in special events management, design and marketing, and social media marketing.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Schedules and runs a variety of programs. Determines materials, equipment, facility, supervision or instruction needs for each event/program and coordinates with other PCR staff. Provides supervision, instruction, guidance, and discipline for program participants. Coordinates all aspects of assigned programs. Runs errands, orders and picks up supplies needed for activities sets up required equipment, etc. Assures assigned programs are performed within budget and assures the most effective and efficient use of funds, facilities, and time. Assists the Recreation Manager with the publication of the department’s activity guide and other promotional materials. Manages the department's social media accounts. Designs a variety of publications and promotional materials. Periodically assists the Recreation Manager with updating the department’s marketing strategies. Performs related work as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to maintain records associated with work. Knowledge of recreational activities. Ability to work with a variety of age groups and cultures. Ability to plan and implement large-scale special events for a community of over 4,000 individuals. Ability to effectively manage social media and other marketing efforts. Ability to design effective promotional materials using a variety of computer software. Ability to count and record cash accurately. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of basic arithmetic and office practices and procedures. Experience with Adobe InDesign preferred.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Four (4) years of college with a degree in recreation or related field preferred. One (1) year and/or college internship in recreation with experience in special events, recreational programming, social media, and marketing. Experience managing special events preferred. Experience in marketing and design preferred. Other combinations of education and experience, which could provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed, will be evaluated on an individual basis.
LICENCES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be at least 18 years of age. Required to have, or be able to obtain, an Alaska Driver’s License within 90 days of hire. Ability to pass all required pre-employment testing i.e. Criminal background and History and future periodic random drug testing. The ability to obtain First Aid and CPR certifications within 90 days is required. Must work flexible hours including evenings and weekends, with possible hours during the weekend for various programs. Occasionally the position will require working outdoors with program participants. Must be eligible to work in the US; requirements by Federal Law if hired must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9).
