The Trustees is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Stewardship Manager to serve as a critical team leader to oversee the approximately 900 acres and 10 miles of pristine beach at Wasque Reservation, Leland Beach and Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge. Together with our engagement and ecology team, the MV Stewardship Manager and their team will also conduct day-to-day operations at all our properties, including maintenance, monitoring, enforcement of our rules and regulations, planning, and wildlife protection. These diverse properties include barrier beach, old-growth forest, coastal grasslands habitats, and outbuildings. They will work collaboratively with the MV Engagement Manager, Education Manager, and Island Ecology staff to support the implementation of coastal programs, environmental education, and habitat management plans. In This Role You Will:
Community Engagement
Communicate with local stakeholders such as local residents, community advocacy groups, special interest groups, associations and town boards to foster positive relationships, keep them abreast of projects, and generally share the work of the Trustees.
Support coastal engagement team to implement engagement strategies intended to communicate to beach visitors what is at stake at our coastal properties, and the coast more generally, as sea level rises.
Operations and Administration
Ensure that facilities and infrastructure are safe, clean and in good working order including our upland trails and beach properties.
Ensure proper daily opening, closing, and monitoring of beach properties.
Oversee staffing and scheduling at all properties in cooperation with stewards.
Ensure staff are maintaining the best visitor experience with education of the beach system, enforcing rules and regulations, complying with the Beach Management Plan and The Trustees Order of Conditions.
Visitor engagement
Model and foster an atmosphere that recognizes the importance of our properties as a unique opportunity to connect visitors with the work of The Trustees. Consider employees as advocates and ambassadors for the properties and the organization at home and in their community.
Develop and implement strategies to meet or exceed membership and revenue goals.
Support the Engagement Manager, Education Manager and their seasonal staff in implementing programs that provide meaningful and safe opportunities to connect with The Trustees’ special places.
Enterprise and Revenue Goals
Support the retail operations to maximize sales and visitor satisfaction.
In consultation with the Director, implement strategies to grow revenue opportunities at all properties and implement strategies that result in membership recruitment growth annually.
Implement strategies to grow/maintain summer visitation annually and provide access for year-round islanders.
Property stewardship and Risk Management
Oversee and perform the stewardship, preservation and maintenance of the properties’ historic, cultural and ecological resources in accordance with organizational guidelines, conservation and resilience goals and beach management plan.
Work with the Ecology team to ensure that beach activities and guest/staff behaviors are in full compliance with Endangered and Threatened species protection program guidelines.
Maintain a safe and functioning parking areas, beach conditions, and trail systems across MV properties, particularly as it relates to storms, flooding, marine mammal protection, dangerous ocean conditions, and shark awareness.
Risk Management
Identify and manage risks to the business and take responsibility for ensuring the actions of you, your team, and our visitors are safe, secure and compliant with all relevant Trustees policies and best practices including cash handling, visitor and landowner relations, weather conditions, and beach/marine conditions.
Work with stewards to support off-season hunting activities.
During fall, winter, and spring seasons, carry out routine stewardship activities across MV properties including snow removal and major storm preparation/response.
Strong leadership and at least 5 years of supervisory experience in a Recreational Management or another natural resource field, hospitality, or related setting.
Exceptionally strong customer service and communication skills.
Capable of effectively handling high-pressure situations.
Strong computer skills, some knowledge of point-of-sale systems, and a general aptitude for technology.
A quick and independent learner, able to pick up things on the job and quickly adapt to new situations.
An eye for detail, as well as the ability to look at the ‘big picture’ and be able to guide staff towards a common goal.
Knowledge of maintenance, basic mowers, landscaping equipment, and experience in trailering.
Additional experience/background in the following areas is a plus: Ecology, travel/tourism, beach management, service industry, teambuilding, landscaping, and outdoor facilities.
Must have a valid license and be able to meet Trustees Driving Policy requirements.
Evening, weekend, and some holiday work is required.
Access to a vehicle is necessary.
Chainsaw and basic carpentry skills desirable.
Two years of supervisory experience in a service industry or customer-facing role.
