General Summary:
The Director of Community Engagement and Inclusive Excellence will oversee the development of the UMass Boston Athletics & Recreation community engagement program. This program will entail initiatives that focus on the planned engagement of UMass Boston athletic teams in the surrounding community and of the intentional engagement of external community partners with UMass Boston athletics and recreation through the use of UMass Boston athletic and recreation facilities to meet partners’ programming needs. The community engagement program will provide opportunities for UMass Boston student-athletes to engage with and give back to area schools, non-profit organizations, and programs on a regular basis and to participate in activities, which reinforce the UMass Boston Athletics and Recreation mission, vision, and values.
The Director of Community Engagement and Inclusive Excellence also support the vision, management, planning, and execution of all Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives for UMass Boston Department of Athletics & Recreation. Working closely with the Vice Chancellor, Director of Athletics & Recreation, the Deputy for Internal Administration/SWA, the Assistant Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Black Student Life, this position will serve as the department’s NCAA Diversity and Inclusion designee and take a systems approach to the promotion and practice of equity, diversity and inclusion efforts for the department’s student-athletes, students, coaches, and staff and in support of and alignment with the UMass Boston’s Athletics’ strategic plan. The ideal Director of Community Engagement, Equity, Belonging, and Inclusive Excellence will have a passion for and understanding of the principles of inclusivity and will help generate both creative ideas and data-informed plans to make UMass Boston Athletics better: easier to access, with fewer barriers, more welcoming, and a greater sense of belonging for all. They must have a deep commitment to confidentiality, a proven commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion principles, be detail-oriented, highly motivated, and have a proven track record of taking initiative, utilizing data to inform decision-making, and multi-tasking. This position will report to the Deputy for Internal Administration/SWA with a dotted line to the Vice Chancellor, Director of Athletics & Recreation.
Examples of Duties:
Community Engagement Job Responsibilities
Responsible for creating a community engagement program strategy for the department of athletics to serve the greater Boston community in alignment with the mission of the University and the Department of Athletics and Recreation.
Serve as the primary point of contact for the department of athletics with community partners specific to engagement opportunities for the UMB student athletes and coaches and utilization of facilities to meet programming needs.
Create, document, and maintain database of community programming events
Participate in the planning, writing, development, and implementation of current and potential future grant proposals
Arrange transportation, room reservations, and food for all community programming events
Regularly promote programming activities by coordinating program stories and photos with Communications staff to appear on the athletics and/or University website(s), social media platforms and/or shared with local media.
Partner and coordinate with Assistant AD for Student-Athlete Welfare for student-athlete community engagement efforts.
Work closely with Associate AD for Facilities and Sport Administration to coordinate external community programming with athletics and recreation facilities.
Develop an annual report to share yearly community engagement internally and externally.
Equity and Belonging Job Responsibilities
Development of a systems-based plan/strategy for EDI departmental initiatives for all staff, coaches, and student-athletes.
Oversight of all aspects of EDI education and training for staff and student-athletes.
Work with department and University constituents, including the Athletics and Recreation Associate Talent Development Manager, to implement principles and policies for the effective recruitment and retention of staff members and student-athletes of underrepresented groups.
Liaison to the University Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Serve as liaison to and support student-athlete affinity groups.
Serve as department's NCAA athletics diversity and inclusion designee.
Partner and coordinate with Deputy Title IX coordinator for programming efforts.
Administrative Responsibilities
Adhere to all policies and procedures of UMass, Conference offices and NCAA
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree; master’s degree preferred.
Four-five years of related experience in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion is preferred.
Background in sports, as a former student-athlete, coach, and/or administrator is preferred.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external constituencies.
Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure.
Ability to manage multiple projects with specific deadlines and adjust to changing priorities in a professional manner.
Strong organizational and project management skills.
Ability to use initiative and independent judgment to accomplish results.
Demonstrated judgment, discretion and tact.
Ability to work independently and with a team.
Strong attention to detail.
