Groton is located on Fisher’s Island Sound in southeastern Connecticut, about 10 miles west of the Rhode Island border. The town is bounded on the west by the Thames River and the City of New London, on the north by the Town of Ledyard, and on the east by the Mystic River and the Town of Stonington. Interstate 95 runs east west through the community. The department currently manages 1,263 acres of active and passive recreation areas including parks, open space, golf course, waterfronts, memorials and cemeteries. We have two indoor facilities, the Groton Community Center and Thrive55+ Active Living Center (formerly Groton Senior Center) Within the center is a gymnasium, multi-purpose space and numerous classrooms. Various room modifications have been made to accommodate different classes. Thrive 55+ is a 40,000 sq. ft facility with a fitness room, exercise room full kitchen and various class rooms and meeting spaces. The department provides a variety of programs including youth and adult sport leagues, after-school programming, group exercise classes, health and wellness classes and clinics, trips and socialization opportunities. The department is deeply committed to serving all those in the community, providing accommodations to ensure full participation.
