The City of Lynchburg is seeking a dynamic, collaborative, and innovative leader to serve as its next Director of Parks and Recreation. This position provides leadership, vision, direction, and managerial administrative oversight to the Parks and Recreation Department and employees accountable for the development, maintenance and operation of the City's park system grounds, related facilities, structures, and the City Market. The Director is responsible for improving quality of life through preservation of open spaces and scenic environments, and the provision of leisure activities and services to residents and visitors of all ages. Work involves significant community engagement and public involvement with elected officials, other policy makers, and citizens. Serving as a member of the City’s senior management team, the Director collaborates with other City departments to ensure that the City’s mission and core values are incorporated into operational activities and services.
To perform this job successfully, the incumbent must have a passion and drive for leading an urban parks and recreation department and must be committed to creating a positive work culture that promotes personal and professional development. Excellent communication skills and demonstrated maturity in decision making are essential.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree (Master's degree preferred) in recreation, business administration, public administration or related field, with at least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in parks and recreation including supervisory experience, team leadership and facility/program management; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Current certification by the National Recreation and Parks Association as a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional.

The City of Lynchburg Department of Parks and Recreation offers a variety of services and activities to residents and visitors. We maintain 17 parks, which offer organized and open areas for recreation, enjoying a picnic, fishing, canoeing and kayaking, and children’s play. The Jackson Heights Art Studio is one of Lynchburg's hidden gems, specializing in pottery and stained glass! This unique neighborhood art studio features 10 potter’s wheels, a slab roller table, an extruder, and a variety of clay and glazes for creating hand-built and wheel projects. Stained Glass artists are provided with grinders, lightboxes, an array of textured and colored glass sheets, solder, and tools to make colorful window hangings. Our seasoned instructors practice hand over hand instruction, and diligently work to cultivate a space of creativity and growth. All experience levels are welcome.
