Assistant Director of Athletics/Head Equipment Manager

The Colby College Department of Athletics seeks an assistant director of athletics/head equipment manager beginning December 1, 2022. This is a full-time appointment. The position provides focus and leadership for equipment room services and supports the athletic department in all aspects of equipment management. This position also supervises assistant coaches and student workers assigned to the equipment room. Reporting to the associate director of athletics, this position supports the work and goals of the athletic department and the College. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Establish and maintain equipment room policies and procedures that support a culture of excellence and adhere to safety and branding expectations
Be proactive in updating and improving policies and procedures to accommodate for future growth of operations
Evaluate and monitor effectiveness of services, policies and procedures; identify problems and institute/recommend changes
Manage the services and day-to-day operations of the athletics equipment room that has centralized responsibility for all athletic equipment purchases and inventory for 32 varsity programs and recreation
Supervise and train student worker staff and assistant coaches assigned to equipment operations
Determine work assignments and work schedules to accommodate the extended hours and complex scheduling of collegiate practices and sporting events
Consult with head coaches regarding the procurement of athletic equipment and uniforms following evaluation of current equipment, utilizing cost effective strategies; provide guidance on uniforms and equipment material, style and manufacturer
Make decisions regarding the appropriateness of requested expenditures and authorize expenditures within broad guidelines
Ensure adherence to College, state, NCAA and NESCAC policies and procedures, including Title IX, regarding the issuance of equipment and services for all intercollegiate sports
Inventory goods received, pay invoices and reconcile Visa card procurement within the Workday platform
Oversee the maintenance of a continuous inventory of all athletic equipment and conduct a seasonal equipment inventory for each assigned sport using appropriate inventory computer programs; repair items as regularly as needed
Coordinate inventory distribution and return of equipment utilized by student-athletes for in-season teams
Research and coordinate effective laundry room procedures to ensure that game uniforms, practice gear, warm-up suits, etc., are laundered and ready for distribution to student-athletes on a daily basis or as needed
Ensure proper fitting and maintenance of all sports equipment including helmets and pads to provide a safe environment for student athletes
Remain current with evolving safety standards that are necessary to reduce liability
Coordinate package pick up from campus mail centers
Ensure the availability of equipment support for visiting teams and officials
Work outside of a regular schedule including frequent weekend, evening and/or early morning duties

KEY RELATIONSHIPS: This position has significant interactions with faculty and staff, students, alumni and other outside constituencies.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: General office, athletic facility (grass, turf, courts, gymnasium, training rooms), and campus environment. The position requires work outside and in inclement weather with frequent early morning, evening and weekend work required throughout the year with those dates determined by the associate director of athletics. Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Walking, standing, bending, twisting, and lifting up to 50 pounds is required. Computer usage involving repetitive and/wrist motion is required.

Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience
3-5 years of experience in an NCAA college equipment services setting preferred
Certification by American Equipment Managers Association preferred
Knowledge of the standards issued by OSHA for exposure control for blood-borne pathogens
Familiarity with all types of athletic equipment and its proper use, fitting and maintenance
Skate sharpening, or the desire to learn a plus
Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations, as well as Title IX guidelines
General sewing skills necessary; knowledge of use of sewing machines a plus
Working knowledge of computer programs and inventory software
Ability to work irregular hours, holidays and weekends
Excellent communication, supervisory and management skills are required
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with various constituents and stakeholders to make an impact as a member of a team and diverse community
Knowledge of, respect for, and proven skills to engage with students, coaches, administration and other community members of various cultural backgrounds is required
Colby is a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and has 28 intercollegiate sports that compete at the Division III level, and four programs (men’s and women’s Alpine and Nordic Skiing) that compete at the Division I level. The department also hosts a variety of club and intramural sports. Over one-third of Colby’s 2,000 students participate in intercollegiate sports, and in total, nearly three-quarters are involved in fitness and recreation activities in the department.
The College is home to a new, state-of-the-art athletics complex, which is among the best Division III facilities in the country. The 350,000 square-foot athletics center includes an indoor track and field competition center, aquatic center with Maine’s first 50-meter pool, squash center, gymnasium, hockey arena, strength and fitness center, training rooms, and coaching suites. Additionally, the College recently opened a 70-acre-plus outdoor competition center that consists of three gleaming new competition and recreational fields that are also among the finest outdoor venues in Division III.
