This is the starting ranging. The position is represented by IEBW Local Union 1547 under a collective bargaining agreement with the City of Cordova.

The opportunity
Do you want a career that allows you to utilize your skills and make a direct impact in the local community through assisting in the development and operation of recreation programs and facilities?
 
In this frontline role, the ideal candidate will have practical knowledge of recreation programs,  operations and administration and has responsibilities for identifying, delivering, and evaluating appropriate programs, services and/or events.

The City of Cordova (population 2,300) is nestled in the heart of a spectacular wilderness of Prince William Sound, Alaska.  Cordova has a close-knit and active community environment. The area is famous for Copper River salmon and its location offers a wonderful mix of active recreational pursuits, hiking, skiing, hunting, and fishing in some of the world's richest waters. Recreation is year-round and trails, forested mountains, and glaciers beckon to serious hikers and casual walkers alike.  Cordova is off the Alaska road system, but Anchorage is a short 40-minute flight with daily jet service or a scenic ferry trip to Whitter on the Alaska Marine Highway System.

About you
Ideally, you’ll bring with you a minimum of 2 years recreation program management experience, supported by a college qualification in parks, recreation, physical education or in a relevant field. You will have experience in community engagement, needs assessment and evaluation delivering results and innovation in a community setting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Post-secondary education in related field
  2. Two (2) years’ experience in recreated, physical education, or related field
  3. Any combination of education, experience, and training to meet the necessary
  4. First Aid, CPR & AED Certification, or must obtain within 30 days of

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education, or related field.
NECESSARY COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, BEHAVIORS)
  • Knowledge of recreation programing philosophy, trends, principles, and
  • Ability to create, implement and evaluate programs and
  • Knowledge of the supplies, equipment, personnel, and organization necessary to conduct a planned recreation
  • Knowledge of general safety practices and procedures as they relate to the proper conduct of programs and
  • Ability to maintain records, make reports and keep informed in the recreation
  • Ability to develop and manage a budget
  • Knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office applications. Knowledge of Gym Assistant Software preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic marketing tactics
  • Knowledge of a variety of recreation activities suitable for participants of all ages and
  • Ability to lead and instruct participants of all ages and abilities in a variety of recreation
  • Knowledge of the aquatic recreation
  • Ability to effectively manage a team of support staff and
  • Ability to understand, follow and give written and oral
