About City of Valdez
Valdez (pop 4,000) is an historic fishing community located on the Prince William Sound. It is the northernmost ice-free deep- water port in the United States, and for this reason was selected as the Trans Alaskan Pipeline System (TAPS) marine terminal site. Valdez has abundant high-paying technical and administrative jobs, and low rates of crime and unemployment. Located at mile-zero of the Richardson highway, Valdez is approximately 300 road- miles from Anchorage. It is also home to Pioneer Field Airport, which has daily flight service to and from Anchorage via Ravn Airlines (45-minute flight). Valdez is a base-camp for many recreational activities, including snow-machining, backcountry skiing, fishing, hunting and hiking. The summers are cool, and the winters are warm (by Alaskan standards), with temperatures seldom dropping below 25 degrees. Valdez is known for its heavy snowfall, averaging over 300 inches per year. The City of Valdez owns a local hospital, which is managed via contract with Providence. Valdez is also home to two health clinics. The University of Alaska operates a fully staffed branch location, and the City’s primary schools are recognized as among the best-funded and best-performing in the state.
