The City of Valdez Parks, Recreation, & Cultural Services Department is hiring a Recreation Manager in the Parks & Recreation Division. This is a fully-benefited position working 37.5 hours per week. Under supervision of the Director of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services, the Recreation Manager is responsible for planning, organizing and coordinating a comprehensive community recreation program for all ages and ability levels, including outdoor and adventure recreation, special events, leisure classes, skills clinics, camps, aquatic activities, and other seasonal and social programming based on community needs and interests. This position includes supervisory responsibilities of the Recreation Division, including oversight of the Recreation Coordinator and Aquatic Center Coordinator.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in various Parks and Recreation sites. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, airborne, waterborne and blood borne pathogens and infectious disease. May be subject to frequent standing, walking, swimming, lifting and inclement weather.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation or related field
• Three (3) yrs. in a supervisory role
• Background working with Youth; either as a coach, supervisor, event coordinator or outdoor recreation programmer
• Programming background in special events, ongoing general recreation activities, and outdoor recreation
• Budgeting oversight
• Revenue generation experience
• Experience working with multiple NGO’s and governmental agencies
• Must obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certifications within one (1) month of hire.
• Valid State of Alaska Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record within 30 days of hire.
• Must be able to pass a background check.
• Individuals in this position cannot be listed as having a founded child abuse or neglect complaint.
• Must demonstrate an understanding of and the necessity for staff training manuals, emergency action plans, risk management and liability mitigation.
• Must obtain and maintain necessary certifications as they relate to assigned venues and program development.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master’s degree in Recreation or closely related field
• Five years in a supervisory role overseeing multiple staff roles and responsibilities
• Certified Parks & Recreation Professional (CPRP) certificate from National Recreation and Parks Association
• An understanding of the role of OSHA, ADA, and DEC in the area of recreation
