JOB DESCRIPTION: 

Responsibilities of the superintendent of recreation are as follows: 

• Provide the leadership, management, and vision for the Recreation Division necessary to achieve the agency's goals and objectives as directed by the executive director and the JCPRD Board of Commissioners, including the management of divisional staff.
• Provide leadership and direction to the agency as a member of the Administrative Team, JCPRD's highest-level leadership group.
• Determine the strategic direction of the Recreation Division with overall JCPRD and Johnson County goals and objectives in mind.
• Effectively communicate strategies internally and externally.
• Create a culture to support strategies and provide mechanisms to implement them.
• Foster buy-in and commitment with key stakeholders.
• Ensure the sound financial status of the Recreation Division through the delivery of both General Fund and Enterprise Fund supported services. 
• Monitor program selection, development, promotion, and participation.
• Guide the establishment of and approve processes and procedures to ensure the successful operation and maintenance of JCPRD owned or managed recreation facilities and programs.

RECREATION DIVISION OPPORTUNITIES AND CURRENT CHALLENGES:

• Multiple progressive capital improvement projects for recreation facilities and services.
• Recruiting, training, and retaining a large team of recreation professionals that support 90% of the organization's enterprise operations.
• Progressive community partnership/relationship building that supports sustainable growth in recreation services.
• Participation in the development and implementation of JCPRD's strategic plan (Legacy Plan) to guide the organization for the next 15 years.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required in Recreation, Administration, or related field. Master's degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field preferred. Relevant experience may be substituted for a degree. Ten (10) years of relevant experience at a progressive park and recreation department or related agency required. Three (3) years of experience in recreation programming within a wide variety of service/program offerings required. Five (5) years leading, directing, supervising, and coordinating the work of others. Experience within the public sector preferred. NRPA Certified Park and Recreation Professional or Certified Park and Recreation Executive preferred.

Special Requirements

Required Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong mathematical and budgeting skills, knowledge of marketing and fee strategies. Ability to work on multiple priorities simultaneously. Leadership and supervisory skills, including teambuilding, motivation, delegation of duties, strategic planning, goal setting, and complex decision-making skills. Adept at public presentations and report preparation.
