Minimum Education, Experience and Certification
Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred. Safety-related degree and/or Parks Management or Recreation degree ideal. High school diploma or GED equivalency required.
Experience managing a team strongly preferred.
Five years of increasingly responsible experience in municipal facility maintenance preferred; or an equivalent combination of experience, training and certification(s) which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Knowledge of OSHA requirements needed; experience with safety management preferred.
Computer, smart phone and internet proficiency required, including use of Microsoft Office (TM) Excel/Word or equivalent.
Valid Illinois Driver’s License along with a driving record acceptable to the Township’s insurance carrier.
American Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification, or ability to obtain within 2 months of hire.
This role is a full-time, salaried (exempt) position that requires some overtime on a consistent basis. Typical hours: Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., plus an occasional weekend.

Job Summary
Under the direction of the Township Supervisor, the Park and Facilities Director manages the maintenance staff and operations of the Township grounds, parks, recreation and athletic fields and facilities. This position performs a variety of semi-skilled and/or skilled duties as well as specialized projects as assigned. Supervise full-time and seasonal Park staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for all park and facility services including maintenance of parks, public walkways, open spaces, trails, fields, playground, skate park, tennis and basketball courts.
- Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of all employees/contractors/workers involved in park grounds, playground equipment, athletic fields and facilities maintenance and minor repair.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance and repair schedules for equipment and facilities maintenance.
- Estimate costs related to work and materials required for Parks Department, submit to Township Administrator and Township Supervisor.
- Coordinate work assignments with outside vendors, contractors and other Township departments.
- Assure completion of inspections required by Parks Department staff including safety inspections of equipment, playgrounds, irrigation and sprinkler systems, utility location and equipment operation.
- Devise guidelines and protocol for proper work techniques, use of equipment, and safety precautions and requirements.
- Provide training and ensure subordinates comply with all guidelines and regulated environmental, health, and safety programs.
- Able to perform duties required of Park Grounds and Maintenance Worker(s).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to effectively supervise, train, motivate, evaluate and assign the work of park and maintenance personnel.
- Maintain a level of expertise in park and maintenance, terminology and management.
- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and standard practices regarding grounds maintenance.
- Knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety precautions required for a variety of equipment used in park and facility maintenance.
- Ability to perform duties in compliance with OSHA and Township health and safety requirements and risk management protocols.
- Skill in the operation and use of various types of ground maintenance equipment and hand tools.
- Ability to effectively communicate, understand instructions and follow directions.
- Flexibility in the work environment. Ability to work effectively with changes in work priorities.
- Ability to work independently and complete projects according to deadlines.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with co-workers, contractors and the general public.
