POSITION SUMMARY: The Head Strength and Conditioning Coach works to support the mission and integrity of Vanguard University, to develop and formulate future planning to reach institutional and department goals, to lead initiatives and to create an excellent experience for our students through their participation in athletics. Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach is responsible to design, implement, conduct and monitor challenging strength and conditioning activities that are organized, educational, progressive and customized to Vanguard University’s intercollegiate sports programs to improve speed, agility, flexibility, energy systems and prevent injury.
Supervises weight room, provides expertise, guidance and training in the strength and conditioning programs for all student-athletes and sport teams.
Coordinates with the Head Athletic Trainer and assists with the rehabilitation program for student-athletes.
Coordinates with all head coaches on the design, implementation and supervision of the strength and conditioning programs for all intercollegiate athletic teams; including the management of any web-based programs.
Provides athletes with guidance and proper training techniques for free weights and other strength training equipment; provides expertise in strength (weight) training and physical conditioning as requested by the head coaches of all intercollegiate sports.
Maintains up-to-date records on the strength program of each team and specific individual workouts of student-athletes; and abides by all national, conference and university compliance regulations concerning the strength and conditioning coach.
Maintains the athletic weight room for facility cleanliness, keeps maintenance records of all weight room equipment, manages oversight for scheduling between athletics, kinesiology and student life recreation programs and updates the Athletic Director on needed equipment upgrades and purchase schedules.
Determine team work out schedules in the weight room.
Must be able to competently interact with culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty and staff.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s Preferred.
Minimum of two years' strength training experience required with a preference in experience at the collegiate level.
Certified through a nationally recognized strength and conditioning program such as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or a Collegiate Strength or Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA) as required by the NCAA or equivalent thereof.
Experience and demonstrated ability in the design and implementation of safe and effective strength programs for a variety of sports. Knowledge of medical terminology and strength and conditioning equipment.
Ability to maintain/obtain CPR, First Aid and AED certification.
Ability to work flexible schedule, including early mornings, nights, and weekends.
Strong commitment to the student athlete welfare, transformation and development spiritually, mentally and physically.
Experience working with diverse constituencies and sensitivity to multi-cultural issues.
Excellent customer service: must be team-oriented, able to demonstrate exceptional communication abilities, both orally and in writing, and work with multiple audiences both externally and internally.
Ability to forge strong working relationships with others and have a capacity for engendering confidence and trust.
Must be highly motivated, organized, multitasked, and goal-orientated.
Must be able to work both independently and as a member of a team.
Knowledge and acceptance of the Christian mission, principles and philosophies of Vanguard University. An enthusiastic, mature, contagious Christian faith and active church participation desired.
