The St. Mary's County Recreation & Parks Department is seeking a high-energy, enthusiastic champion for Therapeutic Recreation. The ideal candidate will have experience serving the public of all ages with disabilities. The TR Specialist will also be responsible for providing inclusion services for all programs offered by the department. Position is also responsible for various special events throughout the year.
Job Summary: Develops, implements, and supervises therapeutic recreation programs for individuals with disabilities; manages Therapeutic Recreation programs including defining goals and objectives, setting standards, developing, and interpreting policies and procedures; reviews and approves programs and projects; performs other duties as assigned.

Evaluates program effectiveness;
Prepares annual budget requests for Therapeutic Recreation programs; controls expenditures and monitors revenues;
Originates purchase requisitions and check requests;
Prepares grant and related financial reports regarding their status;
Recruits, selects, and trains part-time and seasonal staff;
Plans, schedules and assigns work; evaluates work and counsels employees on performance;
Prepares articles, newsletters, flyers, news releases and advertisements to publicize programs and events;
Presents at professional conferences on a local, state, and national level;
Maintains extensive mailing lists of individuals and groups interested in special recreation programs;
Acts as department liaison to advocate agencies, public schools and community groups;
Reviews and makes recommendations for all facilities developed in the department to insure compliance with various building codes concerning physical access to individuals with disabilities;
Reviews technical literature, conducts surveys, meets with vendors, exchanges information with other governmental agencies and organizations; attends professional conferences to identify new programs, methods, and equipment;
Maintains records of revenues and expenditures, inventory of supplies and equipment, payroll, and program participants;
Prepares periodic administrative reports, monthly and annual reports;
Performs other duties as assigned.
Professionalism: Candidate must be committed to intentional planning and development of new programs to meet the needs of those most vulnerable in the population. Enthusiasm and desire to make a difference and bring fresh ideas to a growing department.
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Therapeutic Recreation Administration, or other related field.
Experience: Two years or more of experience in program planning and administration. Preferred certifications such as Certified Parks & Recreation Professional (CPRP), Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), or willingness to obtain within 2 years of hire.
Negative drug test result from pre-employment drug screen;
Pass extensive background check with favorable results;
Successful candidate must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States prior to employment.
