The Department The mission of the Community Services Departmentis to enrich the community through the provision of recreational, cultural, and educational opportunities for persons of all abilities. The Community Services Department takes pride in “Enriching the Community through People, Programs, and Partnerships”. The Department is a diverse organization which consists of five Divisions that work collaboratively to meet the vision, mission, and goals of the department: Administrative Services, Cultural Services, Library Services, Parks Services, and Recreation Services.
The Division The Recreation Services Division is one of five in the Community Services Department. The Recreation Services Division provides recreational and educational opportunities for persons of all ages and abilities. The programs of this division include Youth Sports, Adult Sports, Parks and After School, Special Events and Teens, and Senior Citizens and Therapeutics.
The Position The Recreation Services Manager is an integral part of the Community Services Department’s Management Team. The priorities for this position will be program evaluation and establishing innovative solutions for budget control and accountability. The overall responsibility of this position is developing and implementing City-wide recreation programs through direct reports of four professional staff and a division budget of approximately $5.8 million. The Manager also serves as staff liaison to the Parks and Recreation Commission, Youth Council, and Commission on Aging.
Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way of obtaining the necessary knowledge and abilities would be:
Bachelor's Degree from a college or university in Public Administration, Business Administration, Recreation or a related field and four (4) years of progressively responsible professional Recreation experience which includes at least one (1) year of supervisory experience of a major program.
Specific and substantial experience, in addition to the four (4) years required, which prepares one to perform the job duties may be substituted for the education on a year for year basis.
Ideal Candidate In addition to the above requirements, the most successfulcandidate will possess the following:
Knowledgeable in current management principles, practices, and techniques;
Experience with budget development and implementation, including innovative budgetary solutions;
Knowledge of recreation programming including strong program evaluation;
Exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the City Council, public officials, staff, and the general public.
