This is a senior level management position responsible for the preparation, organization, implementation and evaluation of the parks and recreation programs, year-round activities and their respective facilities and employees. Position consists of administrative and supervisory assignments, with overall operational responsibility for the Township’s parks and recreation department. The Director is responsible for the ongoing development and maintenance of the Township’s park system and the administrative detail involved in the coordination of the recreational programs. The Director is responsible for exercising independent judgment and initiatives in fulfilling these tasks. General, specific direction and approval is received from the Township Manager.
Responsible for establishing and maintaining recreational programs that promote the physical, creative and social development of participants.
Responsible for attending Park and Recreation Board meetings as the liaison for the Boardof Supervisors.
Responsible for departmental budget.
Responsible for first level risk management of his/her department including safety training, departmental training, and employee evaluation.
Responsible for supervising and scheduling of his/her departmental employees.
Coordinate the organization, implementation, operation and evaluation of recreation programs and their respective facilities.
Responsible for keeping an accurate inventory of all recreation equipment.
Responsible for scheduling of the Township sports fields for community use.
Coordinates communications with non-Township building facilitators for the purpose of scheduling facilities.
Responsible for conducting on-site inspection of all of the park facilities and equipment and to coordinate maintenance and repair.
Develops new programs and activities through research of trends and community needs with the approval of the Township Manager.
Pursues viable park and recreational grants and other funding opportunities.
Maintains accurate statistics on programs, finances and park operations.
Recommends departmental policy in accordance with Township objectives, and as directed.
Coordinates publicity and promotional strategies, including printed and electronic media.
Responsible for the collection and accounting of all cash receipts.
Performs other assignments as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of recreational activities and facilities.
Considerable knowledge of the principles, techniques and processes of public or business administration as it relates to parks and recreation.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates, business partners, other government/non-government agencies and the general public.
Ability to create and execute presentations to the public and public officials.
Knowledge of financial and personnel principles and practices.
Knowledge of computers and familiarity with word processing.
Ability to work independently on difficult or complex assignments and to interpret and execute verbal and written instructions with minimal supervision.
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information in a professional manner.
Ability to speak and write effectively.
Ability to regularly report to the job at assigned times and perform assigned duties.
Minimum Acceptable Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in recreation and parks or related field.
Three years experience in recreation and park activities or youth athletic programs or counseling.
Any acceptable equivalent combination of education or experience.
Certificates and License Required
Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.
Certified Playground Safety Inspection (CPSI) certificate (must be obtained within one year of hire).
CPR and first aid certificates (must be obtained within six months of hire).
Ability to pass physical/medical/drug screening tests.
Ability to pass background test
