The Hartford Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a highly motivated, energetic Parks & Recreation Intern for the 2020 summer season.
The Hartford Parks & Recreation Department is a year-round, national accredited agency. The department services a population of 10,000; offering a variety of leisure programs, comprehensive athletics and special events. The department manages an outdoor sports complex, ice arena, and public properties consisting of thirteen parks.
Under the general direction of the Director and Superintendent of Recreation Programs, assignments will be based on the Intern's strengths, growth areas and interests. Responsibilities will vary to broaden the learning experience and provide a well-rounded experience for the Intern. The Hartford Parks & Recreation Department has designed an internship program that introduces all aspects of a diverse and comprehensive Parks & Recreation department. The student will be given the opportunity to put what they have learned to work. It is a "hands on" experience that reflects what park and recreational professionals do on the job to ensure necessary and enhanced services to the community.
Experiences gained will include program planning, summer camp, special events, budget preparation, personnel supervision and working directly with the public. The position is 40 hours per week with some evenings and weekends. Internship length is up to fourteen weeks. The Town of Hartford is an EOE.
Declared major/minor within the Parks & Recreation Leisure Management services, physical education, sports tourism or related field of study or other related degree, with an approved educational institution.
Must be at least a sophomore standing by the end of the semester you are currently completing. If you attend vocational/technical school, you must have at least completed the first-year program.
Completed application, valid driver’s license with clean driving record, ability to pass a required drug screening and ability to pass criminal background screening.
CPR & 1st Aid Certification (or the ability to acquire the certification upon hire)
Experience in recreational programming to include but not limited to youth and adult programming, special events, and athletics.
Experience in using Microsoft office products including Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point and Publisher.
Experience in using social media.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to develop public understanding and participation in Parks and Recreation programming through a variety of public relations activities.
Ability to interpret to the public the program, its philosophy and objectives through all suitable means.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative planning and working relationships with other public and volunteer community agencies.
Ability to achieve public relation objectives through speaking engagements and use of media.
