The Vice President of Public Policy & Advocacy works to advance NRPA’s mission and vision by increasing awareness and support among policymakers, coalitions, and other influential individuals and groups. The Vice President leads the annual development and refinement of NRPA’s public policy platform, and oversees campaigns and initiatives to generate support for specific policy changes through evidence-based advocacy, and strengthening the capacity of local parks and recreation organizations to advocate on behalf of their communities for critical health, conservation, and social equity policies and interventions.
The VP manages NRPA’s public policy staff of three, ensuring the effective monitoring of federal legislation and regulation affecting parks and recreation and the building and strengthening of coalitions in support of NRPA objectives. The VP serves on the NRPA executive team and contributes to the strategic direction and effective management of the organization.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
In collaboration with colleagues, lead the cross-functional development and execution of a proactive, anticipatory annual strategic and tactical public policy plan with benchmarks and goals, including identification of stakeholder partners and coalitions, key decision-maker targets.
Engage in direct lobbying of Congress and the Administration, as necessary.
Provide direction, professional development to direct reports.
Strategically develop, and supports staff members’ development of, relationships with key partner organizations and influencers to advance NRPA’s public policy goals.
Represent NRPA’s interest within coalitions, as necessary.
Working in partnership with communications, oversee development of effective communications strategies designed to advance NRPA public policy platform goals, including leveraging social and print media, ambassadors, key partners and coalitions and the general public, as appropriate.
Act as spokesperson for NRPA, representing NRPA with elected officials, media contacts and other key constituencies.
Staff the NRPA Board Public Policy Committee, working with the co-chairs to advance the NRPA public policy platform and its goals.

Bachelor’s degree required, Master's Degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Public Policy, Law, or related field, a plus
Eight-ten years of experience in Public Policy advocacy in roles of increasing responsibility
Five years of staff management experience
Experience with coalition building and/or organizing in service of a public policy aim
Congressional or executive branch experience a plus
Knowledge of some of the relevant social equity, conservation, infrastructure, health and wellness, and nutritional issues impacting parks & recreation
Experience in a membership-based or member-driven organization a plus
Excellent communications and interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence and the ability to develop purposeful relationships across a wide range of people
