The General Manager for the Isla Vista Recreation & Park District will manage and supervise a full-time staff of 11 plus numerous part time staff members, student workers, and a large cadre of volunteers. The General Manager will also oversee and manage a $2,000,000 plus operating budget. Under the direct leadership of the Board of Directors the General Manager plans, directs and leads the activities of the District including: Administration, Recreation activities, natural resource management, park maintenance, project management and facilities construction.
The Isla Vista Recreation and Park District is offering an opportunity for an experienced Recreation and Parks Professional who will enjoy a professional opportunity in a progressive coastal community, to serve as General Manager. The District encompasses a community of 20,000 located adjacent to The University of California Santa Barbara. The District employs a full-time staff of 11 plus numerous part time staff members, student workers, and a large cadre of volunteers. The $2,000,000 plus operating budget is primarily property tax based. Voters have overwhelmingly approved several property tax assessments, including a recent measure that generates an additional $250,000 annually for recreation programs and park improvements. The District is governed by an elected board of 5 members who serve 4-year terms.
The District strives to improve and protect the quality of life in the community through the maintenance and improvement of parks and the administration of recreation programs. Since the Districts formation in 1972, it has acquired and preserved natural open spaces and developed a network of parks are have heavily used by residents. The District is guided by the themes of respect for the natural environment, public participation in decision making, cooperation with other agencies, and human respect.
Under the direct leadership of the Board of Directors the General Manager plans, directs and leads the activities of the District including: Administration, Recreation activities, natural resource management, park maintenance, and facilities construction.
The Ideal Candidate will have experience:
Working with elected boards or councils
In administration including personnel management, budget oversight, and legislation governing a special district in the state of California
Supervising park maintenance
Completing Capital projects in the area of park development and rehabilitation
Engaging with the community and other local agencies
Education and Experience
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree with major course work in parks and recreation management, public administration, or a related field
5 years of supervisory or administrative experience that includes the areas of parks maintenance and capital improvements.
