The City of Ames Parks & Recreation Department has two exciting opportunities available for the position of Recreation Manager!
Under the direction of the Recreation Superintendent; develops, delivers, and implements a variety of recreation programs for people of all ages and abilities; provides on-site supervision during recreation program operation; assists with the daily operation of various Park and Recreation Department facilities as assigned.

Recreation Manager (Adult and Youth Sports and Activities): This position is responsible for adult and youth sports & activities; hires, trains, and directs approximately 150 temporary staff throughout the year; develops and implements recreation programs, leagues, and activities for all ages; and recommends and administers the instructional and athletic program budgets.
Adult sports and activities programmed and supervised include, but not limited to basketball (25 teams), soccer (13 teams), softball (60 teams in summer and 50 teams in fall), indoor volleyball (40 teams in fall and 60 teams in winter) and sand volleyball (65 teams in summer and 25 teams in fall). Youth sports and activities programmed and supervised include, but not limited to, basketball, dance and gymnastics, soccer (spring and fall), summer camps, t-ball, tennis, and volleyball.
This position includes day, evening, and weekend hours.
Recreation Manager (Homewood Golf Course, Ames/ISU Ice Arena, and Furman Aquatic Center): This position oversees the day-to-day operations of a nine-hole municipal golf course clubhouse (approximately 18,000 rounds per year), a seasonal outdoor wading pool, admission and concession operations for the Furman Aquatic Center (averages 90,000 visits annually) and other Department facilities, and assists with the daily operation of an indoor ice arena; hires, trains, and directs approximately 75 temporary staff throughout the year; develops and implements golf programs and leagues; and recommends and administers budgets for the position's areas of responsibility. A new golf course clubhouse is anticipated to open Spring 2021, so the position may evolve into a Clubhouse Manager.
This position includes day, evening, and weekend hours. From approximately October – March, the hired candidate will assist with day-to-day operations of the Ames/ISU Ice Arena and work from approximately 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Monday through Friday. There will also be some Saturday evening hours worked during college hockey games.

Required: Education and Experience: • Requires a Bachelor's degree in recreation, sports management, or related field and one year of experience in a recreation environment. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Licenses and Certificates: • Must possess a valid Iowa Driver's License within 30 days of hire date. • Current in CPR and First Aid certifications or able to obtain within 60 days of hire date. (Candidates not possessing these certifications may still apply; the city will provide and pay for certification courses.)
Preferred: • Three years of experience in a recreation setting and/or facility management. • ServSafe Food Safety Manager Certificate. • Golf experience including managing a clubhouse, leagues, and lessons. • Youth and adult sports experience. • Ice arena operations experience. • Concessions, inventory, facility rentals, or cash handling experience. • Experience with RecTrac. • Professional experience with social media.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Necessary to Perform Essential Functions: General knowledge of recreation programming and facility operations; awareness of skills, rules and procedures related to various recreation activities, athletic programs, instructional classes and special events; knowledge of CPR, first aid and general safety practices. Some knowledge of machinery associated with assigned duties. Knowledge of customer service principles and practices; proficiency with PC's and computer software applications; knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
Skill in leading and instructing participants of all ages in recreation programs; excellent interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, problem solving and leadership skills. Skill in planning, supervising, and evaluating the work of subordinate staff.
Ability to plan, set up, and conduct recreation programs. Ability to officiate and/or coordinate the officiating of sports leagues. Ability to take initiative and work with little direct supervision; ability to work independently and in a teaming environment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to prepare and maintain accurate records; ability to estimate supplies and equipment for facility/program operation; ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates.
Residency Requirement: The hired candidate is required to live within a 12-mile radius of Ames City Hall (515 Clark Ave., Ames, IA, 50010) within 6 months of starting employment.
