Position Overview This is responsible supervisory work coordinating and supervising a variety of fitness programs, leagues, activities and special events for the Township. Work involves planning, coordinating, programming, and implementing activities and events, preparing program budgets, and supervising employees involved in various programs and activities, in compliance with established rules and regulations.
Supervision Employee must have the ability to implement a comprehensive fitness program, make proper safety decisions, handle scheduling concerns, settle disputes, handle program eligibility questions; negotiate various contracts and oversee program budget.
Work is reviewed through periodic meetings; review of reports, and for compliance with policies and procedures. Supervision extends over employees in all assigned programs.
Essential Job Functions
Plans, coordinates, supervises, assigns and implements a variety of fitness programs, leagues, activities and special events; prepares monthly and seasonal programming; coordinates services offered; writes program descriptions; enters data into program registration software.
Supervises part-time, seasonal instructional and programing staff; recruits and interviews employees; makes hiring recommendations; provides proper training, assistance and guidance; conducts performance evaluations; recommends leave and overtime; makes recommendations for discipline; reviews and approves payroll.
Performs community center manager-on-duty responsibilities; oversees front desk operations and money handling procedures; ensures patron safety; set up and disassembles rooms; coordinates with facility staff.
Monitors registration and attendance of classes and programs; assesses feasibility and public interest; cancels classes and programs; submits periodic reports on programs and activities.
Prepares and monitors annual program budget; provides ongoing financial, activity and attendance information and reports to supervisor; prepares purchase requisitions for all activities, events and supplies; maintains personnel and administrative records and reports.
Negotiates contracts with instructors, vendors, entertainment and sponsors for programs and events; monitors contract compliance.
Handles complaints and solves problems; negotiates with participants.
Develops and recommends policies and procedures relating to fitness programming and activities; the gym, fitness room, and track; interprets, applies and enforces township and department policies and procedures.
Prepares and updates newsletter articles; proofreads, prints and mails newsletter; prepares timely promotional information.
Assists in developing and executing short term and long term goals and objectives for the Department.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Recreation Administration, Exercise Physiology, Health Education or related field required.
Two to three (2-3) years progressively responsible full-time experience in fitness management; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Current certifications in ACSM, ACE, AFAA, NSCA or comparable, and CPR and First Aid.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
The employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.)
Exposed to possible injury from bodily fluids, hazardous waste, unclean or unsanitary conditions.
Works in or around crowds.
Has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons.
Has exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions; occasionally lifts objects 85 lbs or less.
Occasionally carries objects 85 lbs or less; occasionally pushes objects 40 lbs or less; occasionally pulls objects 40 lbs or less.
May be required to work beyond normal working hours, weekends, and holidays for special events.
About Prairie Township Community Center
The Prairie Township Community Center is a 38,000 square feet state of the art facility open to all. The PTCC has some of the latest fitness equipment including treadmills, various styles of elliptical, selectorized and free weight equipment, an indoor walking track, fitness studio for group fitness classes, full size gymnasium, classrooms, an outdoor splash pad and indoor warm water swimming pool complete with lap lanes, giant vortex, a climbing wall and diving board.
The Prairie Township Community Center offers youth and adult programming, including group fitness classes, personal training, both group and private swim lessons, sports leagues, cooking classes, and art activities.
