Senior Associate Athletic Director, External Relations and Brand Management The University of Delaware Newark, Delaware
Under limited direction of the Deputy Director of Athletics, External Relations & Revenue Generation, the Senior Associate Athletic Director will function in the execution of his/her duties independently and autonomously.
The Senior Associate AD is a member of the Director of Athletics & Recreation Services Leadership Team. The incumbent will have varsity sport(s) administrator oversight as assigned by the Athletic Director.
The Senior Associate Athletic Director is responsible for developing, managing, and growing a strategic, innovative and comprehensive external relations strategy. They are also responsible for fostering a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness throughout all levels of the organization, including but not limited to, staffing and programming.
Interactions are extensive, both within and outside the department, including Senior University Administration (e.g., President, Provost, EVP, VP & General Counsel, etc.), Board of Trustees, University offices of the Registrar, Student Financial Services and Admissions, all members of Athletics and Recreation Services, institutional representatives from visiting institutions, outside group representatives, parents, alumni, fans and general public. Major Responsibilities: Team Leadership & Strategy (30%)
Manages the External Relations team. This includes providing leadership, setting and evaluating individual goals, developing and sustaining appropriate training, and monitoring primary focus area of team members.
Summarizes and reports on all team responsibilities and activities.
Drives a culture of analytics to pursue continuous improvement in all responsible areas.
Develops and manages the External Relations budget.
Drives innovative communications, engagement and creatives initiatives for all constituents, which includes but is not limited to: recruiting prospective student-athletes, student, parents, fans, media, alumni, donors, university community, community members to the University of Delaware.
Proactively builds and maintains positive and collaborative working relationships with colleagues across campus to enhance the Athletic Department brand and the University of Delaware mission.
Serves as a member of the Athletic Department leadership team to promote a culture of growth and learning.
Leads Public Relations working group to effectively anticipate and properly manage the athletic departments messaging and branding to external constituents and media partners.
Builds and manages a high functioning, data-driven and forward-looking team, providing team members with clear roles, responsibilities, and support in order to help them be successful, while using data and searchable analytics to strategically think about content, platforms, audiences, time and user experience.
Lead proactive and beneficial collaborations within the athletic department including External Relations units, coaches, administrators, students, community and academic and administrative areas
Identify challenges and emerging issues and work with the leadership team to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
Responsible for partnering with the development team to assist in the departments fundraising efforts and campaign strategy through attending events, participating in gift conversations and building relationships with our constituents
Proactively maintains knowledge of current trends in the events, design, production, brand management and communication fields. This includes the following:
o Participating in peer networking opportunities
o Participating in professional education opportunities
o Monitoring trade publications and websites
Brand and Creative Services (15%)
Works with the external relations leadership team to maintain a high standard of creativity for Delaware Athletics and generate support and interest for our 21 teams and our department
Oversees the process and production for a variety of content including print, video and digital communications channels. To ensure effective engagement.
Monitors all creative output and evaluate success to ensure that the Delaware Athletics continually delivers innovative and effective creative solutions.
Ensures compliance to the Delaware Athletics graphic standards manual.
Works in partnership with the Equipment team, Coaches and the official apparel provider to ensure that there is creative integration and consistency within the general issued equipment and uniforms.
Collaborates with university colleagues to apply best practices to strategy, conceptualization, creation, and production of creative services.
Monitors technological advancements and recommend innovative communications practices based on emerging technology.
Game Experience and Events (15%)
Oversees meaningful and innovative event and game-day experiences for our community in order to engage, inspire and entertain. This includes but is not limited to: athletic competitions, fan days, building dedications, home and away game tailgates, and celebration/recognition dinners.
Continuously improves the atmosphere for our Student-Athletes that fosters a competitive advantage when competing in Newark.
Builds and maintains a fan engagement strategy to further the Athletic Department mission and engage all audiences.
Ensures all events reflect Delaware Athletics’ strategic vision and brand standards.
In partnership with the Associate Athletic Director for Events and Engagement, clearly articulates desired and measurable outcomes for each event.
Sport administrator for UD spirit programs: dance, cheer and mascot. Supervises spirit coaches and ensures their collaboration within department and university functions.
Constituent Engagement and Communications (15%)
Oversees the development, execution and evaluation of audience plans for identified community segments. Segments include but are not limited to students, student-athletes, donors, season ticket holders, community partners, student-athlete alumni, athletic department staff and university faculty and staff
Oversees an innovative, systematic and integrated donor engagement program that encompasses donor appreciation events, endowed programs, and building naming dedications.
Oversees the recognition, acknowledgment and stewardship activities for our community segments.
Creates and uses consistent, accurate, and appropriate information-sharing mechanisms for engaging our community.
Communications, Digital and Licensing (15%)
Manage and serve as the direct liaison with any external multi-media and sponsorship entities (e.g., potential third-party rights holders), which is responsible for generating revenue and exposure through sponsorships and multi-media avenues.
Oversee digital execution and ideation of shared messaging which supports revenue development in ticketing, partnership, merchandise and development initiatives.
Demonstrate positive working relationships with local, regional and national media covering Delaware Athletics through interpersonal communications, email, mobile and use of program and personal social media platforms. Leverages personal social accounts to engage with individuals, and ultimately, influence the coverage of our programs
Oversee the proactive communications and solicitation of national media coverage for events and feature stories on Delaware athletes, teams, and other department milestones/accomplishments of interest using messaging pillars, brand truths and key messaging points.
Promote the academic and athletic accomplishments of our programs as well as the community, educational, promotional, partnership, ticketing and development-related initiatives of the Athletic Department with targeted approaches to our audience wheel, including prospective student-athletes.
Collaborate with the Office of Communications & Marketing and specifically the University’s Manager of Licensing and Trademarks to develop, produce and distribute appropriate marketing, advertising, public and media relations, collateral and electronic media supporting the awareness of and attendance at Intercollegiate events and games.
Responsible for the creation, implementation and evaluation of the Licensing program.
Strategic Partnerships (10%)
Oversees a comprehensive plan which builds and shares a compelling view of the direction and purpose of the Athletic Department and its initiatives to educate, engage and motivate external partners, in conjunction with Athletics and University colleagues.
Collaborates on key initiatives related to marketing platforms, sponsorship and partnership strategy, integration of partners, in conjunction with University colleagues, for the benefit of the larger institution.
Ensure positive positioning and positive coverage of internal Delaware Athletics partners and related initiatives.
Build and sustain positive and mutually-beneficial relations between Delaware Athletics and various community and University organizations, in partnership with the appropriate units within the Athletic Department.
Identifies new areas of opportunity related to community partners, and integrates the request, when appropriate across the Delaware Athletics team.
Manages the conceptualization and timely executions of all advertising and promotional communications (traditional and new media) including oversight of the 3rd party digital buying agency and oversight of the media planning, placement and trafficking process for paid and owned media.
Participates in and facilitates the development of marketing strategy, partnerships, and engagement programs.
Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree with seven years of job-related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in higher education (or a comparably complex organization), sports management, communications, marketing, or related field preferred.
Strong organizational and analytical skills with the ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and advance strategic plans and programs that support the Athletic Department mission and contribute to the overall goals and objectives of the external relations programs.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
Skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with alumni, donors and community members.
Ability to generate strategic and creative solutions in order to advance the department’s efforts to maintain and strengthen high-quality relationships with all audiences.
Ability with managing multi-phase projects from inception to completion, including the ability to build consensus among team members and balance multiple concurrent priorities.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Problem solving and sound judgment in situations requiring independent initiative and tact.
Experience with brand management, creative campaigns, multimedia technology and communication plans.
Exceptional ability to work in a networked way, emphasizing collaboration in a complex environment.
