Purpose: The Senior Director of Athletics is responsible for the overall leadership and management of development of a diverse set of athletics and recreation programs encouraging a lifelong commitment to health and fitness enabling a culture of a healthy campus. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Life, the Director of Athletics is responsible for delivering quality athletics and recreation programs that foster ongoing relationships with and for the students and other members of both internal and external communities. The Director of Athletics works closely with the Dean of Students and the directors in the student life area to provide athletics and recreation programs that enhance student development and learning.
Principal Accountabilities: ?Leadership and Management oLeads the development, planning, execution and promotion of a strong intramural, intercollegiate, tournament and summer camp athletics program oDevelops, maintains, and promotes recreational programs to all members of the University community and external stakeholders oDevelops strategic goals and objectives as well as annual operating objectives ensuring that resources and the annual budget are optimally configured and deployed to achieve the best results in collaboration with the Vice President oManages and organizes staff and coaches; provides athlete and coach orientation oAssesses the quality of and student satisfaction with athletics and recreation programs oCollaborates closely with the Dean of Students and the directors in the student life area to ensure strategic alignment of work plans and objectives across the student life area and to fully utilize opportunities for shared projects oContributes to the broader institutional goals of increasing participation by students in student life activities oMonitors staff performance and development goals, assigns accountabilities and sets objectives ?Budget, Resources and Athletics Facilities Management oProvides fiscal management of the athletics office budget oOversees athletics facilities management, ensuring that facilities are maintained and equipped for athletic practices, events and competitions oEnsures student compliance with relevant policies, procedures and professional standards ?Student Engagement oDevelop and provide a variety of student services and programs such as student athletic recruitment and retention, and athletic eligibility, health and safety oMake recommendations in matters of student athlete discipline; establish standards of dress and conduct for team travel, training and practice rules oResponsible for crisis response and the management and referral of critical incidents oOversees the athletics website to ensure current and accurate information is posted as well as the content of any publications, brochures, web-based, and social media content produced by the office of athletics oPerforms other related duties and responsibilities as recommended by the Vice President
Minimum education requirement: Bachelor's degree is required; master’s degree preferred
Senior management experience: Demonstrated success in building and managing collaborative teams; the ability to work collaboratively with others in a shared governance environment; 10 years of management experiences
Experience in working with students and young people; experience in athletics administration preferably in a university setting
Has excellent leadership skills and is able to manage people in complex interpersonal environments
Has knowledge of current practices in the delivery of university athletics programs
Has excellent communication skills and is able to effectively handle a full range of interpersonal interactions with a diverse population of students, staff and faculty
Has the ability to make clear, informed decisions
A collaborative leader with a proven track record for bringing groups together to meet objectives
A demonstrated capacity to work confidently and effectively in an international environment and a multicultural setting
Proficient in balancing multiple duties and responsibilities
Creativity in problem solving and programming
Has excellent organizational skills and attention to details
Highly effective in all aspects of crisis management, including the ability to work collaboratively with others in managing crises
Ability to manage budgets, resources and facilities
