SUMMARY OF POSITION INFORMATION & TYPICAL DUTIES
The City of Merriam Parks and Recreation Department is seeking an energetic, self-motivated Recreation Coordinator. We’re experiencing significant growth building a new 66,000 square foot community center with indoor/outdoor aquatics scheduled to open summer of 2020. The Recreation Coordinator will perform a variety of technical, professional and administrative duties in planning citywide special events and cultural year-round activities for citywide parks and recreation programs. This position will manage the operation of our art gallery and Merriam Marketplace, including the Farmers’ Market. This is a new position that will exercise supervision and authority for assigned programs and activities, Program Assistant, Farmers’ Market staff and volunteers. Responsible for other related duties deemed necessary and as assigned.
Graduated from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Park Resources, or Recreation Leisure Service;
Two years of progressively responsible experience in the development of recreational programming and special event production;
Two years progressively responsible experience in the supervision and development of staff;
Certified Park and Recreation Professional designation or ability to obtain within one year of appointment;
Current certification in American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid, or the ability to obtain one;
Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Merriam is located in Northeast Johnson County, Kansas, and is only eight miles south of downtown Kansas City. A central location along Interstate 35 and relatively small size make Merriam an accessible and convenient place for travelers, residents, and businesses. The City of Merriam owns and operates nine parks and one 4-mile streamway trail for a total of approximately 90 acres of parkland. The department coordinates over 25 special events annually, including three major events: Turkey Creek Festival, Turkey Creek Car and Motorsycle Show, and the Heartland Artist Exhibition.
