This is the top position within the Aquatics Area and is an Assistant Director position within the department. We have five pools and two spas including a 50 meter competition pool and dive well where we host national level events including SEC Swimming and Diving Championships, NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, USA Swimming Junior Nationals, as well as a variety of regional and local meets. The successful candidate will supervise two professional staff, a graduate assistant, and over 140 lifeguards and head guards. Job Description: The Student Development Specialist III for Aquatics, will be primarily responsible for supervising and developing a large student staff. This includes teaching certification and re certification classes, evaluating performance, and developing and accessing high impact practices. This position is also responsible for overseeing the mechanical and chemical function of maintaining the pools as well as assisting in the development and implementation of risk management protocols and the area budget.
Responsibilities:
Texas A&M Student Recreation Center: The Texas A&M Student Rec Center is home to one of the premier aquatics facilities in the country. The natatorium houses a 50 meter competition pool and competition dive well and has hosted events from local high school dual meets to the NCAA Division I Swimming Championships. Other events include the NCAA Zone Diving Championships and SEC Swimming and Diving Championships. In addition to the natatorium there is an indoor instructional pool, an outdoor leisure pool and two spas. Programming such as “Adult Learn to Swim” and “Masters Swimming” are balanced with events, Health and Kinesiology classes, Texas A&M Men’s and Women’s swimming and diving practice, Ag Swim Club practice, and open lap swimming. The instructional pool is used for everything from water aerobics to lap swimming to kayak roll. As part of the Rec Center expansion project all existing indoor pools have gone through an extensive renovation and the outdoor pool renovation should be completed by May. An 8 lane lap pool is under construction as part of the Rec Center expansion and renovation project. To serve over 50,000 students, 10,000 faculty/staff, elite athletes, the local community, and host national events, aquatics employs 2 Coordinators, a Graduate Assistant, and over 80 dedicated and well trained student workers as lifeguards, event staff, and student technicians. The Assistant Director for Aquatics is charged with developing staff to the fullest potential with a focus on student development, learning outcomes and co-curricular learning. Recreational Sports is dedicated to providing a high quality aquatics experience for Texas A&M University, the surrounding communities, and swimming and diving, and water polo teams from across the nation. This Assistant Director for Aquatics will be responsible for the day to day operations of all indoor and outdoor pool facilities of the Department of Recreational Sports including: risk management, pool hours, pool maintenance, chemical treatments, scheduling, lifeguard personnel, equipment and pool policies. Responsible for scheduling, preparing, and hosting high profile swimming and diving meets. Responsible for the professional development and training of full time and student aquatic staff. Additional Salary Information:
- Commensurate based on qualifications and experience. Hours flexible; department’s office business hours, Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. Frequent evenings and weekends depending upon activities and assignments. Attends meetings and conferences concerning students and with student groups at times beyond usual working hours. Twelve month, full-time position. Excellent benefit package. Texas has no state income tax.
