Expand opportunities for new sporting events through marketing Chesterfield County as a sports tourism destination; maintain and develop business relationships created through current events; plan and manage event logistics for Chesterfield County departments and partners involved with tourism-related activities. Supervise and manage operations and recreation staff assigned to Chesterfield County's River City Sportsplex. Serve as county liaison by maintaining strong customer relationships with county departments, community groups, and event organizers to increase county tourism by developing, retaining, and enhancing events within Chesterfield County. Coordinate activities and functions with other Parks and Recreation divisions, county departments, municipalities, outside agencies and partners as appropriate. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with county officials, employees and the public. Develop and participate in event promotion through media interviews, news releases, social media updates, national sporting event organizers/owners, tournament/sporting associations, participants and sponsors that attract, retain and enhance tournaments/events. Collect, analyze and report visitor spending and economic impact data from county and regionally hosted tournaments. Prepare cost projections for identified and proposed tournaments/events. Perform other work as required.
Bachelor's degree in recreation, sports management, event planning and management, tourism, or related/equivalent field. Master's degree preferred, with a minimum of three years of related experience including one year serving in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Background in sports tourism and the management/operation of an athletic venue a plus. Considerable knowledge of public recreation, principles and practices of recreation program planning, physical education, team sports management, and sporting event planning for diverse audiences; knowledge of event planning, special event coordination, and media relations; strong customer service skills; ability to work independently and/or collaboratively with others; critical thinking skills with the ability to problem solve and make sound decisions, including but not limited to, under pressure and in emergency situations; ability to present ideas and recommendations clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; project management skills; ability to develop and initiate marketing strategies focused on sports tourism expansion. Knowledge of sports facility operations and maintenance and local government experience preferred. Ability to design, develop and implement programs; to interact with a variety of people from different cultures and backgrounds; and ability to supervise staff. Skills in logistics, equipment purchases/rentals, permitting and expense tracking. Ability to secure and maintain sponsorships for the department. Ability to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment. Possess the ability to direct the work of multiple staff and to coordinate the activities of large numbers of event participants. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain partnerships with various organizations and county businesses that support special events and tourism. Flexibility in work hours will be required (evenings, weekends and some holidays required). Good driving record required. Must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months.
