The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), a six-time National Recreational and Parks Association Gold Medal Award Winner, is seeking a Park Activation Specialist to work at the Montgomery County Department of Parks in Silver Spring, Maryland. We have a career staff complement of nearly 800 employees, and we serve a diverse population of more than one million residents. We manage 421 parks on nearly 37,000 acres of parkland and we are fiscally sound with an annual operating budget of over $100 million, and a six-year Capital Improvement Program of over $220 million.
Under the direction of the Parks Program Development Manager, the candidate will support, assist, and host programs and special events in parks throughout the county. This position will work closely with the Parks Activation Program Coordinator to implement new and existing programs/special events and monitor their progress. The successful candidate will be skilled in assisting with planning, organizing, hosting special events, community relations, marketing, and customer service. This position will also coordinate activities with internal and external stakeholders and manage specialized projects.

Assist with planning, implementing, and administering all aspects of special events and programs that will appeal to diverse audiences of all ages, in is aligned with Montgomery Parks' mission to activate parks year-round.
Coordinate appropriate permits, licensing and other necessary local municipal approvals prior to event occurrence.
Interacts and relates well with diverse audiences and possesses excellent communication skills.
Maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders and community organizations.
Assist with research and recruitment of vendors and assist with vendor contracts.
Track special events and program metrics.
Working in coordination with the Parks Program Development Manager, meet with vendors and stakeholders to coordinate program and event execution.
Collaborate and work closely with internal divisions to assist with set up, trash, restroom, security and tear down needs.
Assist with program evaluation for external and internal feedback on all events for continuous improvement of the activation program.
Performs other duties as may be assigned.
Important Skills and Characteristics
Knowledge of industry standards, principles, trends and practices of event management including but not limited to project management, staging an event, risk management, site procurement, communications and consumer/vendor relations.
Desire and enthusiasm to keep ahead of trends and best practices in event programming at public spaces, museums and parks and gardens.
Knowledge of community resources, volunteer, funding, and development resources.
Ability to execute a diverse range of new and original event and programing ideas for diverse audiences.
Skill in planning and coordinating large scale events.
Excellent customer service, verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to think strategically, resourcefully, and be a skilled problem-solver.
Proven ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Ability to be self-directed yet excel in a team environment and ability to build and maintain positive internal and external relationships.
Must have the flexibility and willingness to work on evenings and weekends when required.
1. Bachelor's degree in parks and recreation or related field; or
2. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
3. Valid Maryland driver's license or the ability to acquire one.
One year of partnership and/or business development experience across non-profit, government and/or private sectors.
Bilingual/multi-lingual a plus
Ability to work in both an office setting and outside in various weather conditions
Available to work nights, weekends, and on-call. This position requires a flexible work schedule and is dependent on event and program dates and times.
Experience interacting with diverse communities
Ability to maneuver and drive pick-up truck with trailer
