The position provides an opportunity for a dynamic leader to be a part of the design of neighborhood and community parks and facilities; and craft strategies to meet the community's desire and demand for youth, adult, and senior activities, arts, cultural, recreational, and special event programming. The Director works closely with the community, providing an important connection with the Town Council via the Town Manager's Office, as well as the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, among others.
The Parks and Recreation Director will plan, direct and participate in providing a variety of recreational programs, cultural activities and special events for all ages and interest levels of the community. Position performs a variety of administrative, supervisory and professional duties in the planning and managing of the parks, recreation, sports facility and cultural arts programs and activities for the Town. Position will develop, plan and oversee department operations; develop long range plans for the provision of recreational facilities and open space including greenways and parks for the leisure time enjoyment of the public; direct usage and maintenance of parks grounds and Town facilities; manage the department staff including selection, training, performance counseling and evaluation; supervise regular full-time and temporary employees as well as a large number of seasonal employees; oversee the development of programs, recreation activities and community facilities; work with community groups and individualsto address citizen needs and to develop and modify programs and projects; develop new and modify existing policies and procedures as needs change; recommend the acquisition, development and maintenance of park areas and facilities to best serve the wide interests of the community; develop and maintain the department annual budget; and provide support to the advisory board. Work requires extensive public contact with private groups, civic organizations, local officials, and the general public in the promotion, development, and direction of the parks and recreation program. Position requires graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in recreation administration, physical education or related field and considerable experience of a progressively responsible nature in the management of a municipal recreation program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
