This is a non-exempt, full-time, classified position with full benefits. Range 16, Minimum Salary of Range (expected starting salary): $17.48 per hour; Maximum Salary of Range: $25.76.
DESCRIPTION: Under supervisory direction from the Senior Recreation Coordinator III (Special Events, Sports & Aquatics Programming) and the Recreation Services Supervisor, this position assists with the implementation of a comprehensive departmental program, and is responsible for supervising and implementing current and short-ranged community aquatics center programs and activities, and other related duties as provided. Assists in the day-to-day aquatics center operations and performs a variety of semi-technical and administrative work in scheduling and assisting in the implementation of a year-round aquatics center services program. Includes aquatics center supervision, plus setting up for daily public usage, regular pool maintenance such as vacuuming, skimming, chemical testing and administration duties as assigned. Assignments shall include the daily check of equipment for safety and cleanliness of pool facilities, along with conducting monthly inventories and storing equipment and supplies at the end of each day. Incumbent shall exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment in the day-to-day supervision in areas of the Recreation Center aquatics facility and the outdoor aquatics facility complex. Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, certifications and abilities necessary to satisfactorily perform the job. Graduation from high school or equivalent is required. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in physical education, fitness/health, leisure studies, parks and recreation, or a related field, one(1) year experience in aquatics operations/programming, and one (1) year in a supervisory role is desired. Must be able to obtain valid Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and Water Safety Instructor Certifications within the first 6 months.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This classification involves work developing and implementing aquatics center and recreation programs, supervising staff, and performing day to day aquatics center operations. The planning and implementation can be done in a normal office setting. Additional requirements include, but are not limited to:
Ability to work in an indoor or outdoor aquatic environment that may include working in temperatures up to 110 degrees, in adverse weather conditions, and while exposed to allergenic substances.
Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds.
Ability to sit for up to 40 minutes per rotation on a lifeguard chair or station, and be able to climb a ladder to reach the station.
Sufficient clarity of hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern emergency situations, verbal instructions, and telephones.
Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern emergency situations, discern colors, and comprehend written work instructions, and rules and regulations.
Sufficient sense of smell to be able to detect odors.
Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to respond quickly in an emergency situation and operate control mechanisms and make fine adjustments.
Sufficient strength to swim 500 yards, demonstrating use of freestyle, breaststroke, and side stroke.
Sufficient body flexibility and balance to perform rescue and first aid operations and occupy a lifeguard station accessible by ladder.
