Under direction of the Deputy Director/Leisure Services Division, to plan and supervise the activities of the Park Rangers, including managing the budget, coordinating all field operations, and supervising Ranger staff. Responsible for the coordination, operation, and management of interpretive and visitor services provided by the Park Rangers in general use parks. Provide resource management oversight in designated undeveloped natural areas. Direct the activities of volunteers and corporate groups.
The Somerset County Park Commission manages 15,000 acres of parkland throughout varied properties which include general use parks, special use parks, developed natural areas, undeveloped natural areas, and reserve areas. Annually two million visitors enjoy the parks and facilities of the park system.
The Park Ranger Department is responsible for general patrol, visitor services, management of natural resources, and public safety issues in the general use parks and designated undeveloped natural areas. Although not law enforcement officers, Park Rangers are responsible for the enforcement of the rules and regulations governing the park system. This position is accountable for the leadership of the Park Ranger Department consisting of 13 full-time employees supplemented with seasonal positions. The current operating budget is $780,000; all of which is personnel with the exception of $58,000 in Operations (O/E).
Bachelor’s degree majoring in Park/Recreation Management, Natural Resource Management, or related field, with a minimum of five years progressive management and supervisory experience. Ability to communicate and work with the general public is essential. Ability to supervise staff and departmental programs. Must have the ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, and having the ability to adjust work schedule as required for the efficient operation of programs and facilities. Must have a valid driver’s license. Must have current CPR and First Aid certification.
