The City of St. Clair Shores is seeking an innovative, self-motivated professional to fill the role of Parks and Recreation Director. The City maintains 11 parks and outdoor facilities with 250+ acres, which features a golf course, ice arena, two boat harbors, ball fields, play systems, picnic pavilions, tennis courts, Skate Park, splash pad, open-park land, and other amenities. This position will serve as part of the senior management of the City and reports directly to the City Manager.
The ideal candidate will be a proven effective communicator with outstanding people skills, as the position requires extensive contact with program participants, City staff and officials, and the general public. Customer service inside and outside the organization will be a top priority, with special emphasis on the delivery of programs and services to the public. The Director of Parks and Recreation will be an innovative and creative leader who will bring a fresh perspective as well as exceptional leadership and management skills to the position. Good judgement and common sense are essential.
The position entails a variety of duties including:
Planning, developing, scheduling, directing, implementing, and evaluating year-round, City-wide parks and recreation programs.
Budget preparation and implementation.
Establish and maintain positive working relationships with schools, public agencies, and community organizations to provide quality programs to the community.
Organize and participate in meetings with member organizations and advisory boards.
Oversee and direct Special Events.
Recruit, train, and supervise staff and volunteers.
Update and recommend policies and procedures.
Effectively market recreation programs and events and assist in the preparation of professional quality flyers, brochures, and other publications.
Proactive implementation of technology to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations where possible.

Requirements: Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Parks and Recreation Administration, Public Administration, or a related field with a Master's Degree preferred; at least five years of progressively responsible management experience in a public parks and recreation department agency preferably including golf, arena, aquatics and/or boating; or any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience. Must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Michigan.
Additional Salary Information: Starting Salary: The starting salary range is $85,627 - $100,738 DOQ. The City provides a full complement of benefits including paid vacations, paid holidays, personal days, and sick time. Additional benefits include health, dental, and life insurance and an excellent 401A Defined contribution plan.
