The Village of Sussex, Wisconsin (pop. 11,047) seeks qualified applicants for the position of Parks and Recreation Director. The Parks and Recreation Director is a key member of the Village’s Management Team. This is a highly responsible managerial position reporting to the Administrative Services Director, in close contact with the Village Administrator, and part of the Management Team. The primary function of the position is to oversee the Village’s parks system, recreation programs, and special events. The Parks and Recreation Director will work on large-scale, big-impact projects, such as implementation of the Village Park Masterplan, which includes a new five field baseball/softball complex and a splash pad, as well as the visioning and implementation of new special events and recreation programs, while continuing to build your team and their success.
The Parks and Recreation Director supervises four staff, and is responsible for a team of 10.5 FTEs (10 year round staff members and 10 seasonal employees). The position oversees a $1 million budget approximately. The incumbent will directly impact exciting projects such as the Village Park Master Plan, while directly overseeing all work in Parks and Recreation. The Director will grow special event and recreation program offerings and work with staff to focus on quality and implement new trends in Parks and Recreation. The position interacts with elected officials, committee members, community organizations and other community leaders. The incumbent will have the opportunity to work on other high-level projects that they express an interest in and due to growth will be a part of shaping the future of the community.
The position requires 5 years of experience planning and implementing recreation programs/special events, managing parks operations, or in a public administration position. Three years of supervisory experience is necessary. The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field; Master’s preferred. Must possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license.
The starting salary range is $67,426- $82,986. This is an exempt, management position that is not eligible for overtime pay. The Village’s benefit package is competitive and includes WRS retirement, deferred compensation, health and dental insurance and support for professional development.

The Sussex parks system has a total of 274 acres of park property, divided into 15 parks, open space areas and nature preserves. The Village of Sussex plans to continue making significant investments into the Village’s park system over the next several years, with implementation of the Village Park Masterplan. Recent investments included a new playground at We...yer Park at the new Civic Campus in 2016 and a new playground and trailhead building at Madeline Park in 2018.
The Village also boasts robust recreation, senior, and special event programming. Recreation program offerings include summer day camp, youth sports and enrichment, senior programs, and group fitness. The Village carries out 20 special events in each calendar year, including Spooky Sussex, the 4th of July, and a car cruise.
