Under minimal direct supervision, the Director of Parks and Recreation performs planning, administrative and supervisory work in the direction of the Parks and Recreation Department including Administration; Parks, Gateways and Facilities Maintenance; and Recreation Divisions. Work involves administering a comprehensive recreation program and planning, coordinating, directing and reviewing the activities of the department. The Director is responsible for supervising a professional, technical, clerical, skilled and semi-skilled workforce; supervising the maintenance of City parks and other recreational facilities, buildings, and grounds; and for administering the departmental/division budget and grant funds. The Director must exercise initiative and independent judgment in determining the propriety and scope of programs to be offered through the department, and in all other phases of work. Reports to the Deputy City Manager.
Bachelor's Degree in recreation administration or a closely related field, with Master's Degree in related field preferred, and 6 to 9 years of experience in professional parks and recreation, facility planning, and facility operation/maintenance work, including 3 to 5 years' experience in a supervisory capacity over personnel, finances and facility planning; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Certified Parks and Recreation Professional Certification preferred. Requires a valid driver's license. Our ideal candidate would be a visionary leader with experience in designing and developing parks and programing in a Rural and Urban environments.

Suffolk was founded by English colonists in 1742 as a port town on the Nansemond River in the Virginia Colony. Originally known as Constant’s Warehouse, for John Constant, Suffolk was renamed after Royal Governor William Gooch’s home of Suffolk, a county in East Anglia, England. Before European contact, indigenous American tribes lived in the region for thousands of years. At the time of English settlement, the Nansemond Indians lived along the river. In the early colonial years, the English cultivated tobacco as a commodity crop, but later turned to mixed farming. It became the county seat of Nansemond County in 1750.
