Responsible professional, supervisory and administrative work utilizing modern agronomic, sports turf management, horticultural, and park grounds maintenance best practices to develop, implement and manage a standardized maintenance program for the sports turf fields of the City of Miami.
Work involves responsibility for developing and implementing a comprehensive annual maintenance program, inclusive of budgeting, for all sports fields and open green spaces utilized by permits, park programs, and special events; directing, supervising and assisting a staff of skilled and semiskilled workers in the pest control, fertilization, water conservation and soil quality management of athletic fields to include natural and synthetic turf fields. Work requires knowledge of agronomy and horticulture, and the ability to coordinate the efforts of staff to effectively maintain the quality of playing fields necessary for high volume use by professional and amateur sports at different locations, and to utilize staff and equipment for the maintenance of open fields for recreation and event use. An incumbent is required to be able to author scope of work and oversee the construction of new sports fields with industry best practices and state of the art technology as it pertains to natural and synthetic fields. Administrative supervision is received from the Director, Superintendent, or a designee. The incumbent will supply specialized information and recommendations to the Department Administrators in order to assist in determining general policy.
Plans, lays out and schedules work assignments in all phases of field and grounds maintenance.
Supervises and participates, when practical, in all work assignments.
Maintains daily time sheets and records of work accomplished.
Develops, implements, and updates the department's Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Plan.
Maintains accurate records of fertilizing, watering, insect spraying, disease prevention, and other turf treatments and the effects of each.
Creates reports describing general health of turf or fields at various locations and detailing remedies taken to mitigate, prevent, and alleviate disease of various turfs.
Develops and utilizes preventative maintenance program for all equipment.
Creates a maintenance and inspection schedule of synthetic turf field in order to maintain warranties and immediately address repair needs.
Establishes rapport with various individuals, agencies and experimental stations for the purpose of exchanging views and obtaining the latest information of disease prevention, fertilization, etc.
Assists the Director in budget preparation as it pertains to expenditures necessary for the maintenance of fields and grounds.
Maintains a perpetual inventory of fertilizer, insecticides, herbicides and other necessary supplies.
Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations regarding the chemical treatment of turfs, grass, fields, and other plants.
Performs other related work as required.
Bachelor's degree in Turf Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, Environmental Sciences or closely related field from an accredited college or university
Considerable two (2) years athletic field turf maintenance experience
And one (1) year of related supervisory experience
A valid Driver's License from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class E)
A Certified Sports Field Manager certification is preferred.
NOTE: The selected candidate must obtain the Public Pesticide Applicator License from the State of Florida before gaining permanent status and must maintain it current throughout their employment.
