The Recreation Education/Therapeutic Recreation Program in the Department of Health Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track assistant/associate professorship in therapeutic recreation beginning Fall 2018. Candidates must have an active record of research/scholarship/creative works, and a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The Program currently enrolls over 150 undergraduate and 50 graduate students, the largest graduate enrollment in therapeutic recreation in the U.S. As the only public BS degree programs in Recreation Education and Therapeutic Recreation in New York State within 200 miles, and only one of two Master’s degree programs in NYS, the program attracts students from a widespread area and keenly feels its mission to provide quality education in the discipline and profession. The Program enjoys an outstanding reputation in the region, has an extensive alumni network and close relationships with many professionals and agencies for intern sites, job opportunities for students and graduates, and collaborative endeavors. The program is housed in the College’s state-of-the-art APEX center with access to fitness and sport facilities to enhance teaching and research.
The Department of Health Sciences has additional programs in Dietetics, Foods and Nutrition; Exercise Science; Health Education and Promotion; Health Services Administration; and Public Health with a dynamic faculty and over 1500 students. The Department of Health Sciences is one of four departments in the School of Health Sciences, Human Services and Nursing, which is a leader in health professions education and research for the surrounding region. Lehman College is the only four-year public institution in the Bronx and serves a diverse population of traditional and non-traditional students.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate Therapeutic Recreation courses and in the professional core; engage in research/scholarly publication and dissemination; advise students on academic procedures and career goals; provide service to the department, college, university, and community, i.e. committee, administrative, supervisory, and other assignments normally associated with a full-time tenure-track academic appointment. Evening teaching may be required.
The Lehman College campus is located in Bronx, New York and is a Senior College within the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Lehman is the only four-year public college in the Bronx and is recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution. The college serves mainly undergraduate students preparing them for employment, the professions and further study. The teaching load is 21 hours (7 courses) per year and although the college is predominantly teaching focused, faculty at Lehman are active in research, scholarship and creative works. Service to the college, university and community is part of the mission as is a clear commitment to student engagement including advisement. Teaching is reduced for junior faculty over the first five years for scholarly development and all faculty are actively encouraged to seek external funding. Opportunities are available for faculty development and travel awards. Lehman College and CUNY internal funding is available through competitive grants for scholarship support.
Terminal Ph.D degree or equivalent in Therapeutic Recreation/Recreation/Leisure Studies or a related academic field is required on commencement of the appointment. ABD will be considered but the degree must be completed before the commencement of the appointment. Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) is required. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
Preferred Qualifications: - Practical experience in the field of Therapeutic Recreation - Successful college-level teaching experience - Experience advising undergraduate students and supervising practicum work - Professional involvement at the local and national levels
Salaries are commensurate with education and experience.
