The Huron-Clinton Metroparks, located in Southeastern Michigan, is a five county regional parks system serving Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. This premier park system hosts nearly 9 million visitors each year at 13 Metroparks covering 25,000 acres, including seven golf courses, two marinas, scenic nature trails, beaches, pools, educational activities and winter sports.
The Metroparks is seeking an experienced professional to serve as its Director. Under the direction of the Board of Commissioners, the Director serves as chief executive officer of the Metroparks and provides strategic and operational leadership for the organization. As CEO, the Director collaborates with the Board of Commissioners to establish the future direction for the Metroparks, assures the financial and ethical integrity of the organization, develops and maintains important external relationships and shapes the internal culture of the organization. The position offers an excellent compensation and benefits package.
The ideal candidate will have extensive executive leadership experience and a passion for the outdoors. The candidate must have a proven track record of success in increasingly responsible positions. The successful candidate will exhibit a highly collaborative leadership style, be an effective communicator and have strong financial management skills. The successful candidate will have demonstrated success with direct responsibility to a governing board. Appreciation for and experience managing natural resources is essential. The successful candidate will have worked with external partners including government entities and non-profit organizations. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated success responding to and meeting the needs of diverse constituencies and employees.
A Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited college or university is required, but is not sufficient by itself. The successful candidate will have at least five years of demonstrated experience and success in a relevant executive leadership role. It may be the case that a candidate with exceptional experience of ten or more years, demonstrated success and strong leadership competencies may qualify without a Bachelor’s degree. Appropriate professional certifications are also considered and highly valued. A Master’s degree and Certified Park and Recreation Professional or Executive (CPRP / CPRE) certification are preferred.
