The University of Houston, Department of Campus Recreation seeks an energetic and passionate professional to join our dynamic team of recreation leaders. The Assistant Director is responsible for the day to day operation and staff supervision of a comprehensive Recreational Sports program that consists of Sport Clubs, Camps/Family Programs and Intramural Sports. The Assistant Director will be responsible for development, long-range planning and assessment, budget, risk management, and maintaining accurate records of participation. This position reports to the Associate Director of Campus Recreation for Programs and Assessment.
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Directs the recruitment, selection, supervision, payroll process, and evaluation of staff and students; provide guidance, and is responsible for professional development and training for staff.
Provides supervision to the Coordinator for Recreational Sports and Family Programs and assists with the supervision of the Graduate Assistant for Recreational Sports and Family Programs.
Provides leadership and direction for a comprehensive Sport Club, Youth/Family, and Intramural Sports programs; ensures department policies and procedures are in compliance with local and state regulations; creates various reports including annual and semiannual reports as needed.
Assess, evaluate and mitigate risk for programs, implement departmental emergency action plan, inspect campus program areas and fields, and contribute to the Departmental Safety Committee.
Maintain records, contract agreements, and sports equipment
Responsible for scheduling and coordinating departmental programs; consults with and responds to participant questions and concerns.
Develop, plan, and implement long range strategic plans and assessment of student development, learning outcomes, evaluations of programs, services and staff.
Develop program budgets, monitor expenses and revenue goals, and identify opportunities for fundraising, sponsorship and grants to support programs and events.
Collaborate with campus partners and academic units to develop and implement programs and events that contribute to student success.
Performs other job-related duties as required.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Recreation or related field. Master's degree preferred.
Experience: Minimum requirements include a minimum of 3-years of direct experience with technical and instructional proficiency in a number of pursuits including but not limited to: league scheduling and employee management software, emergency response, purchasing, group dynamics, and student leadership based topics, facility and equipment inspection, purchasing and maintenance of life safety equipment. Proficiency in teambuilding concepts, program design, supervision and training program staff, student development theory and application, fiscal management, program development, and assessment planning. The ideal applicant will have a minimum of 5 years of directly related progressive experience in a university setting, supervisory experience of fulltime staff, and direct experience in the management of sport clubs, intramural sports, and camp/family programs.
Applicants should demonstrate ability to lead and manage a coordinator, graduate, undergraduate student staff, interns and volunteers. Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as demonstrated leadership ability are also desirable.
Skills or Certifications: Candidate must possess American Red Cross CPR, AED, First Aid certifications; instructor certification must be obtained within the first year of employment.
Salary: Commensurate with experience ($46,572- $60,564)
