The Senior Recreation Specialist-Therapeutic Recreation leads Chesterfield County’s Therapeutic recreation program. Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates therapeutic recreation programs for people with disabilities. Programs include classes, workshops, camps, and special events. Facilitates inclusion. Assesses need and designs appropriate services. Supervises instructors, part-time staff, and volunteers. Perform other work as required. Supervises, trains, and evaluates the work of part-time staff, volunteers, contractual and others. Develops and implements strategies to promote public awareness of Chesterfield County’s Therapeutic Recreation programs to include flyers, news releases, schedules, and brochures. Monitors and evaluates programs. Prepares a variety of written reports. Performs other work as required.
Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation or related field; Therapeutic Recreation Certification (CTRS) preferred; two years working in a therapeutic recreation environment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Good oral/written communication, interpersonal, public relations, and management skills necessary. Knowledge of objectives and principles of public recreation program planning; ability to plan, organize and lead recreation activities; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to operate a computer and related software; to interact with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds and varying ages; to supervise staff. Good driving required. Must not reflect a total accumulation of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
