Gardner is a Kansas City suburb in Johnson County, Kansas, with a population of approximately 22,000, 13 parks and over 340 acres of park and trail land which includes a golf course. It is also the fourth fastest growing city in Kansas.
The Parks and Recreation Director is responsible for planning, directing, managing and overseeing the activities and operations of the Parks and Recreation Department, including the divisions of: Administration, Recreation Services, Aquatics Operations, and Parks and Facility Maintenance and experience in Golf Course Management preferred. This employee is responsible for developing and administering a comprehensive, year-round parks and recreation program including the effective and proper operations and maintenance of park property, recreation areas and facilities, and equipment. The Director will oversee the planning for and development of new parks and recreation properties and facilities through the Parks System Master Plan. An employee in this position supervises all Parks and Recreation personnel through the division managers. This position serves as the principal advisor to the City Administrator, and other City officials, regarding parks and recreation activities. Work is performed under the direction of the City Administrator with wide latitude for independence in judgment and procedures.
The ideal candidate should possess comprehensive knowledge of all phases of community recreational activities and their administration; the principles and methods of park and playground planning, and programming; park, trails and playground construction; thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of public administration with special reference to departmental personnel and budget administration. The candidate should also have the ability to develop and execute a well-rounded program of recreational activities; ability to cooperate with and interpret recreational philosophies to City authorities, private groups, agencies and the general public; ability to communicate complex ideas, both verbally and in writing; and the ability to prepare and present detailed reports.
The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation Administration or a related field; and at least 10 years’ experience in the administration of diversified public parks and recreation programs; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Certified Park & Recreation Professional (CPRP) status is desirable. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Valid driver's license, required.
