Manager of Athletic Services 2 (Assistant Director of Campus Recreation for Stone Valley)
The Department of Campus Recreation at Penn State University is seeking candidates for the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation for the Stone Valley Recreation Area. Stone Valley Recreation Area is an outdoor recreational and educational facility operated by The Pennsylvania State University. The 700-acre property is located over the mountain from the village of Pine Grove Mills along Shavers Creek. Stone Valley Recreation Area is a multi-use park that is shared by the Penn State Forestry Department, Shavers Creek Environmental Center, and Campus Recreation a department within the Division of Student Affairs. Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Campus Recreation for Facilities & Operations, this position provides leadership and management of all aspects of Stone Valley Recreation Area. Campus Recreation is a department within the division of Student Affairs that provides wellness, recreational and fitness programs to the campus community through the operation and administration of the following: the new expanded and renovated 200,000 sf IM Building, the McCoy Natatorium, the 700-acre Stone Valley Outdoor Recreation Area, a Tennis Center including 6 clay courts and 4 indoor courts, the White Building, Adventure Recreation, Aquatics, Club Sports, Fitness and Wellness Programs, and Intramural Sports. The position of Assistant Director of Campus Recreation for Stone Valley Recreation Area provides a unique and exciting opportunity to manage a wide array of existing park facilities and operations supporting activities such as boating, sailing, fishing, picnics, cabins/pavilion rentals, hiking/walking trails, and a Vertical Adventure Challenge Course which includes the Odyssey III (high ropes course), Alpine Tower and Giant Swing, Carolina T-Wall (outdoor climbing wall), and a Team Development Course (low challenge course). In addition to these exciting offerings, this position will provide support for the future planning, design and construction of expanded recreational, wellness and student leadership facilities at Stone Valley. Knowledge of basic safety and risk management practices as they relate to outdoor recreation and outdoor facilities as demonstrated through past event and facilities management. Leadership and supervisory skills to select, supervise, motivate and evaluate student employees relative to work performance, crisis management, and peer relationships as demonstrated through past supervision of staff. Budgeting skills to manage multiple program budgets and prioritize use of funds. This position requires independent work on complex assignments, while reviewing progress and updating the Senior Associate Director for Programs as appropriate. Knowledge of student development principles and ability to provide student development opportunities for student staff. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication (oral and written) skills are essential. Must be able to manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines. Attention to detail and good judgment are vital requirements. The successful candidate will have the willingness to lead and work in a team-based environment as well as an eagerness to support and engage with all departmental initiatives and efforts as well as the Division of Student Affairs. The ability to foster a positive climate among a diverse group of staff, student employees and participants is essential. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree in educational administration, recreation or sport management, or a related field preferred. Applicants also must have experience managing recreational programming with demonstrated experience in park management.
