The Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation, Special Programs Division is searching for a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist I who will work with the Therapeutic Recreation programs for individuals with disabilities (e.g., cognitive, social/emotional, physical, sensory). The selected candidate provides on-site program supervision. The incumbent plans, adapts and directs activities that are appropriate to the age and functioning level of program participants. The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist I conducts program participant assessments and adapts activities to meet individual needs.
This individual develops and implements behavior management plans, monitors progress and maintains appropriate documentation. The selected candidate assists with the recruitment, selection and hiring of program staff. This individual plans and schedules staff assignments. Evaluates and counsels staff on job performance. Develops and implements marketing strategies and maintains working relationships with local school officials, citizens, community groups and internal facility staff.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT DUTIES:
Assist in program planning, directing, developing and performing specialized Therapeutic Recreation Programs. Adapt and organize Therapeutic Recreation Programs to meet the assessed needs of people with disabilities. Coordinate staffing schedules, activity locations, and transportation. Programs and coordinates year-round activities specialized in Therapeutic Recreation Programs.
Hire, directly supervise, evaluate and recommend contract termination of intermittent staff and volunteers. Plans, schedules and distributes assignments to intermittent staff and volunteers. Evaluates and counsels employees on ways to improve performance. Assist with coordination of Therapeutic Recreation all staff trainings. Meet regularly with supervisor regarding tasks and programs. Address and resolve the needs of staff.
Ensure the safety of participants, staff, and volunteers during program hours. Post and completes emergency plans. Maintains and secures participant assessments, medical information, and other private documentation. Uphold MSDE Child Care licensure, CJIS Finger Printing and First Aid and CPR certification.
Create informative, vibrant and engaging monthly program and special event announcements, newsletters and fliers for publicized distribution regarding Countywide programs. Contact and inform individuals and groups interested in specialized Therapeutic Recreation programs regarding updates.
Develop contracts with vendors. Submit petty cash, purchase card, and checks requests. Track expenditures within approved budget for timecards, afterschool snacks, supplies, and entertainment.
Participate in professional enhancing trainings and classes. Leads specialized projects and cross divisional partnerships.
Meets departmental requirement of career staff trainings. Fulfills duties on working organizational committees. Utilize the SMARTlink database system to assessed participant accounts and program changes.
Conduct community outreach at Back to School Nights, School Open House, PTA meetings, Career Day, and/or Organization Night.
Bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation or related field (e.g., special education, vocational rehab, etc.), and one year of progressive part-time experience, or associate degree in therapeutic recreation or related field and three years full-time professional experience or an equivalent of progressive part-time experience.
Certification on a paraprofessional level from the National Therapeutic Recreation Certification Council preferred
Valid Maryland driver's license.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A. Considerable knowledge of: (1) Therapeutic Recreation; (2) disabilities; (3) legislation and regulations affecting individuals with disabilities i.e., American with Disabilities Act (ADA); (4) aquatics, recreation and leisure programming (5) behavior management; (6) assessment tools; (7) conflict resolution; (8) disability advocacy organizations.
B.Ability to: (1) Read and write technical and complex reports and correspondence; (2) make effective presentations to large groups; (3) communicate effectively and have strong analytical skills; (4) possess an attitude of enthusiasm and commitment in providing recreation opportunities for individuals with disabilities; (5) respond to crisis intervention situations; (6) establish and maintain good working relationships with the public, other agencies, and coworkers.
Preferred prior experience in the following:
Planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of therapeutic recreation programs for individuals with disabilities.
Experience in supervising program staff in a community-based therapeutic recreation program.
Knowledge of behavior management principles and the ability to implement effective behavior plans when needed.
Ability to conduct and make recommendations on individualized assessment plans, ability to apply principles to solve practical problems, experience conducting meetings and preparing training presentations.
Ability to utilize various communication techniques within the program, such as, Picture Expressive Communication Symbols (PECS), functional sign language, etc.
Knowledge of Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) procedures and licensing requirements for child care providers.
Works in an office and in the community. Works long hours, some evenings and weekends. On call during program hours and responds to emergency situations. Some driving required. Works with individuals with various disabilities (i.e. cognitive, social/emotional, physical, and/or sensory).
