Great Falls, MT (pop. 58,000) The City of Great Falls is seeking energetic, professional and accomplished candidates for a Director of Park and Recreation position. Ideal candidates will have well rounded management experience with a focus on Park Management and Recreation programming. The new Director will have several unique opportunities in this position; to guide (and shape) the organization through the financing and implementation of a recently adopted Park and Recreation Master Plan, to take the already strong partnerships with our military and business community partners to the next level, and to continue to forge an eager group of employees into an empowered “TEAM.” The City of Great Falls is an award-winning city that is home to Malmstrom Air Force Base which is the headquarters of the 341st Missile Wing, one of three U.S. Air Force Bases that maintains and operates the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile. Located in Cascade County, the city was settled around the mighty Missouri River, one of nature's most magnificent waterways. The Missouri River provides Great Falls with its name because as the Missouri cuts through the city it drops over 500 feet in a series of rapids and five breathtaking waterfalls - the great falls of the Missouri. Known as "The Electric City", Great Falls has a long tradition of history which began with the famous expedition of Lewis and Clark in 1805. Great Falls is centrally located in Montana and within a few hours’ drive of Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, as well as within close proximity to abundant camping, fishing, biking and hiking opportunities. The Director of Park and Recreation will have responsibilities that include leading the City’s divisions of Urban Parks/Forestry, Pools, Recreation Center and Golf Courses.
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and experiences:
A strong commitment to creative problem-solving through teamwork and professionalism, outstanding supervisory and administrative skills, fiscal acumen and highly developed interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
A demonstrated record of team-oriented style leadership with a comprehensive knowledge of parks planning and maintenance, data driven recreation programming, aquatic facilities, golf courses, trails development and maintenance, forestry and the ability to facilitate the development of a strong solutions based, customer service focused department.
A bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation management, public administration, public policy, business administration, or related field from an accredited college or university is required; a master’s degree is preferred. A Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) or Certified Park and Recreation Executive (CPRE) is desired.
